Nancy Guthrie’s Former Colleague Shares Memories of Their College Days

A former colleague reflected on his time working with Nancy Guthrie, who has now been missing for three weeks.

Jack Guthrie—who shares Nancy’s last name but is not related to her—shared some of his memories during their college days, working together at the University of Kentucky’s student newspaper.

Jack served as editor of the Kentucky Kernel from fall 1962 to spring 1963, working alongside Nancy, who served as society editor.

“She did her job well,” Jack told Scripps News. “She was a nice writer, so there wasn’t any connection other than that.”

Nancy Guthrie Described as a ‘Very Polite Young Woman’

Nancy wrote a column twice a week for the student newspaper, covering campus social events and Greek life activities.

“But two days a week, she had a column,” Jack continued. “You know, the sports editor keeps up with who is the quarterback this week. She was keeping up with who’s sponsoring what events and what the fraternities and sororities were doing.”

Jack described Nancy as a reliable presence in the newsroom and dedicated to her work.

“She was a very polite young woman. A very good writer,” Jack told the outlet. “She was friendly, and she was in the office, usually our newsroom, at least three days out of five a week.”

As the search for Nancy Guthrie enters its third week, her former colleague expressed sadness over the situation.

“Yeah, it, it’s unfortunately, it’s sad, the whole thing,” Jack told Scripps News. “You know, and you almost shed a tear when you see it, of knowing anybody that’s got to go through what that family’s going through.”

People pay their respects at a makeshift memorial outside of Nancy Guthrie’s home.

Meanwhile, members of the Catalina Foothills community voiced their heartbreak over Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

“It’s really tough,” Marla Handler, one of Nancy’s neighbors, told CNN. “We expected this to be resolved within a day or so, but this has been going on now for two weeks, and there is still no proof of life.”

Handler added that her normally peaceful neighborhood has become the focus of a “national manhunt.”

Amid the search for Nancy, community members have been upgrading their security systems and communicating with each other more frequently.

“Neighbors are texting and emailing, updating each other quickly if we see anything unusual occur,” she added. “There’s been more neighborhood watch efforts, more people actively observing.”
