The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, has entered its sixth week as investigators continue to search for answers.
Nancy disappeared from her Tucson-area home during the early morning hours of February 1. Authorities believe she was taken from her home against her will.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos recently shared an update on the investigation, suggesting authorities may have identified why Nancy was targeted. However, he emphasized that investigators are still working to confirm that theory.
“We believe we know why he did this, and we believe that it was targeted, but we, we can’t, we’re not 100% sure of that,” Nanos said while speaking to NBC News.
Nanos also warned the public not to assume the incident was isolated.
“So it’d be silly to tell people, ‘Yeah, don’t worry about it. You’re, you’re not his target,’” Nanos said. “Don’t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe. No, keep your wits about you.”
Nancy Guthrie Investigation Continues After 41 Days
Authorities say the search for Nancy remains active.
Friday, March 13 marks Day 41 since her disappearance. Investigators from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI continue working together on the case.
Officials believe Nancy was abducted from her home during the night.
Despite weeks of searching, authorities say they have not yet uncovered significant leads.
Nanos declined to provide additional details about the possible motive or suspect.
The sheriff has also faced criticism over earlier public statements during the investigation that some observers said created confusion.
Even so, officials say the investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement continues to pursue potential leads.
Savannah Guthrie and Family Continue Pleas for Nancy Guthrie
Savannah has publicly spoken about the search for her mother in several social media messages.
Savannah and her siblings, Annie Guthrie and Camron Guthrie, have urged anyone with information to come forward and help bring Nancy home.
In one message shared February 24, Savannah addressed the possibility that her mother may already be gone while continuing to ask for answers.
“If this is what is to be, then we will accept it, but we need to know where she is,” Savannah said. “We need her to come home.”
The family has also offered a $1 million reward for information connected to Nancy’s disappearance.
Savannah Guthrie Receives Support From ‘Today’ Colleagues
Savannah has received strong support from colleagues at NBC’s “Today.”
She recently visited Studio 1A to reunite with coworkers and thank them for their encouragement.
“Savannah Guthrie stopped by the studio this morning to be with and thank her ‘Today’ colleagues,” a spokesperson for “Today” said in a statement to Page Six.
The spokesperson also confirmed that Savannah plans to return to the program but remains focused on supporting her family during the search.
“While she plans to return to the show on air, she remains focused right now supporting her family and working to help bring Nancy home.”
Co-host Jenna Bush Hager also spoke about Savannah’s connection to the show.
“Even though it feels like the hardest thing to do, it’s also her home and where she feels so loved,” Bush Hager said.
Sheinelle Jones added that Savannah’s colleagues will support her whenever she is ready.
“Whenever [she is] ready, we are here,” Jones said.
Authorities say the search for Nancy continues as investigators work to determine what happened and bring answers to the Guthrie family.
