A possible new development has emerged in the search for Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of ‘Today’ host Savannah Guthrie. Nancy was reported missing on February 1 after her family realized she had disappeared from her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills.
Investigators believe the 84-year-old may have been taken from the residence sometime the night before. Nancy has now been missing for more than 40 days.
Here is the latest update in the ongoing search for beloved Nancy Guthrie.
Photos of Pants and Knee Brace Shared Online Amid Nancy Guthrie Search
According to online posts from self-styled investigator Jonathan Lee Riches, a pair of pants and a knee brace were discovered Thursday in a desert wash near the home of Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni in Tucson, Arizona.
Riches, who has been following the case in Tucson, shared photos of the items on social media while documenting developments in the search.
“Pants & knee brace found in a wash by Annie Guthrie & Tommaso’s home. We notified authorities.”
He also posted a widely circulated photo of Nancy Guthrie with her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, suggesting the missing woman appeared to be wearing similar tan pants in the image.
Officials have previously said they believe Guthrie may have been taken from her bed, which has led some observers to question whether she would have been wearing regular clothing rather than nightwear.
Still, the reported discovery of pants and a medical knee brace nearby has sparked renewed online discussion about her possible movements before she vanished.
Several media outlets covered the discovery, including Hindustan Times and IBT.
Online discussion has also focused on Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni because the reported discovery of clothing occurred near their homes.
The couple was among the last people known to have seen Nancy Guthrie before she disappeared. Authorities say Guthrie had dinner with her daughter Annie that evening, and Cioni reportedly drove her back to her nearby home afterward.
However, officials have emphasized that family members are not considered suspects.
Please note: Authorities have not confirmed, however, that the clothing found in the area belongs to Guthrie. We are keeping an eye out for an update on this.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has publicly stated that none of the Guthrie family members are under suspicion in the case.
Nancy Guthrie has now been missing for weeks, and investigators have not yet identified a suspect.
Nancy Guthrie Has Been Missing Since February
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on February 1 after her family realized she had disappeared from her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills.
Investigators believe the 84-year-old may have been taken from the residence sometime the night before.
Her disappearance prompted an immediate search involving local law enforcement and federal agencies.
FBI Task Force Intensifies Investigation
GettyEarlier this month, authorities formed a specialized task force dedicated solely to investigating Guthrie’s disappearance.
The group includes agents from the FBI and officers from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators wearing shirts labeled “Violent Crimes Task Force” were seen canvassing the neighborhood on March 6 and speaking with residents.
Maureen O’Connell, a retired FBI special agent who served for 25 years, told NewsNation that the involvement of a violent crimes task force is a significant development.
“The violent crime task force, those are always your alpha dogs, and they do a great job,” O’Connell explained.
“They take no prisoners. They go exactly where they need to go to get whatever it is they need done. And they really do get it done.”
NewsNation reporter Brian Entin also confirmed that four detectives and a sergeant from the sheriff’s department have joined the FBI team and are now working together from the FBI headquarters in Tucson.
O’Connell suggested the independence given to the unit may help the investigation move forward.
“They know what they have to do. And they don’t like people breathing down their necks because they don’t need it,” she said.
“And they’re like stallions. You’ve got to let them run. And when you do, you’re going to get results.”
Investigators Say Focused Search Could Be a Good Sign
Neighbors in the area say they have noticed a shift in the investigation in recent days.
One resident told reporter Brian Entin that members of the task force appeared noticeably more focused while speaking with people in the neighborhood.
Former FBI agent Maureen O’Connell said that kind of targeted questioning can sometimes indicate investigators are beginning to zero in on key leads.
“Well, when you’re focused, obviously you’re not scattered,” she said.
“You have something to focus on. You’re looking in a certain direction, and the evidence is leading you in that direction. So, that is a good sign.”
O’Connell added that the optimism expressed by investigators gives her hope that progress may be coming. “The fact that they’re optimistic gives me optimism. I feel very good about it,” she said.
“So, the fact that the investigators themselves are looking up, that gives me hope. That gives me a lot of hope.”
Nancy Guthrie has now been missing for weeks, and investigators continue working to determine what happened as her family awaits answers.
