While authorities have cleared the Guthrie family as suspects, the vehicle belonging to Annie Guthrie remains “still part of the investigation.”

Interest in the car resurfaced after it was previously taken for processing. Addressing the questions online, true crime correspondent Briana Whitney shared an update with her followers.

“Multiple people have asked me what the status is on Annie Guthrie’s car after it was taken for processing in the case,” Whitney wrote.

She said she contacted the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and received this response:

“All we can say at this time is that the vehicle is still part of the investigation.”

Investigators have not released additional details about the vehicle as the case continues to draw national attention and authorities push forward with their work.

Earlier Buzz Around Annie Guthrie’s Car

Earlier in the investigation, Journalist Ashleigh Banfield shared an update citing a law enforcement source. Banfield built her reputation covering major national stories and courtroom drama. Prior to NewsNation, she held anchor and reporting roles at CNN, MSNBC, ABC News, and Court TV.

“I have spoken with an impeccable law enforcement source who has informed me with his knowledge of the investigation, of some extraordinarily serious pieces of information about this crime scene,” Banfield had said just two weeks into the investigation.

Banfield described the source as “very connected” and “highly regarded,” with “impeccable” credentials. She later reported that“the vehicle has been towed, impounded, and is now in evidence.”

Local authorities, however, have limited their public comments to confirming that the vehicle remains under investigation.

Sheriff Cleared Speculation Around the Guthrie Family

As online speculation intensified, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department moved to clarify the record, stating that Nancy Guthrie’s family members have been cleared as suspects.

“To be clear…the Guthrie family – to include all siblings and spouses – has been cleared as possible suspects in this case,” the department said in an official statement on February 16. “The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case.”

The statement continued: “To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel. The Guthrie family are victims plain and simple … please, I’m begging you the media to honor your profession and report with some sense of compassion and professionalism.”

Sheriff Chris Nanos also addressed the risks of premature conclusions during an earlier press conference.

“Nobody’s eliminated, but we just really don’t have enough to say, ‘This is our suspect, this is our guy, we know — or our gal.’ We don’t know that,” Nanos said, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “And it’s really kind of reckless to report that someone is a suspect when they could very well be a victim.”

He added, “To the media, I plead with you to be careful of what it is we put out there, because we don’t have anybody here listed as a suspect, and you could actually be doing some damage to the case — but you can do some damage to that individual too. Social media is kind of an ugly world sometimes.”
