Amid growing concerns that the Nancy Guthrie case could be going cold, a retired FBI agent has pointed to a good sign that could help move the investigation forward.
Earlier this month, authorities formed a special task force solely focused on Nancy Guthrie’s investigation. The task force consists of FBI agents and Pima County Sheriff’s Department officers.
The agents, who were wearing shirts that read “Violent Crimes Task Force,” were seen going door-to-door on March 6, asking Nancy’s neighbors some questions.
Maureen O’Connell, who worked as an FBI special agent for 25 years, told News Nation’s Brian Entin that the involvement of this special task force is a good sign.
“The violent crime task force, those are always your alpha dogs and they do a great job,” O’Connell explained. “They take no prisoners. They go exactly where they need to go to get whatever it is they need done. And they really do get it done.”
Nancy Guthrie Update: Retired FBI Agent Optimistic as Special Task Force Take Charge
Meanwhile, Entin confirmed that four detectives and a sergeant from the sheriff’s office have joined the FBI task force and are now collaborating at the FBI headquarters in Tucson.
O’Connell noted that the autonomy this squad has now could actually be beneficial for the case.
“They know what they have to do. And they don’t like people breathing down their necks because they don’t need it,” she added. “And they’re like stallions. You got to let them run. And when you do, you’re going to get results.”
Special Task Force Is ‘More Focused & Confident’
One of Nancy Guthrie’s neighbors told Entin that the task force investigators were noticeably “more focused” in their questioning, which O’Connell considers a promising sign.
“Well, when you’re focused, obviously you’re not scattered,” O’Connell shared. “You have something to focus on. You’re looking in a certain direction, and the evidence is leading you in that direction. So, that is a good sign.”
O’Connell added that the investigators’ optimism gives her high hopes that the case will be solved.
“The fact that they’re optimistic gives me optimism. I feel very good about it,” she continued. “So, the fact that the investigators themselves are looking up, that gives me hope. That gives me a lot of hope.”
Nancy Guthrie has been missing since February 1, and authorities have not yet identified a suspect.
