“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” couldn’t have picked a better name. The very name of Marvel Studios’ latest billion-dollar hit seems to symbolize a second wind for this entertainment juggernaut. Make no mistake, folks are going to want more after seeing Tom Holland’s grounded Spidey tale – especially after the introduction of that major character.
While I can’t promise you some extra material from director Destin Daniel Cretton’s action spectacle, I can suggest that you stream a movie that shares some DNA with that very person’s story. (Sorry for being vague, but even in Week 2 we’re trying to avoid repeating Steve Lacy’s spoiler reveal for those who haven’t taken this spin through Marvel’s New York.)

You Need To Stream Fallen On Netflix – At Once
It’s a total shame that director Gregory Hoblit’s horror show doesn’t have a more massive following. The 1998 movie, starring the likes of Denzel Washington, Embeth Davidtz, John Goodman, and James Gandolfini almost feels like something that should have popped off earlier. Nevertheless, you can join us Day 1 adopters in revisiting this very title – as it’s currently streaming on Netflix.
In a nutshell, “Fallen” is the story of detective John Hobbes (Washington), and what may be his most challenging case. After closing a case involving an infamous Philadelphia serial killer, the man appears to be finding himself haunted by this case in everyday life. Though as you can see in the trailer for this flick, there’s a bit of a twist to that:
As it turns out, it wasn’t the man he put away that was the real killer, but a demonic force that possessed him; and has the ability to jump from person to person with merely a touch. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

That synopsis alone is enough of a throwback to Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) mentally controlling various persons in order to taunt Peter Parker. However, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” even has scenes that feel like a strong tip of the hat to “Fallen.”
One such moment is when Spider-Man, while trying to test his Universal Inhibitor, is baited into a chase to protect Mary Jane (Zendaya) from his then-unknown foe. You can see segments of that chase in the trailer included below, but the most potent reminder of this connection is already timestamped below:
As you can see, the similarities are not in the neighborhood of a spitting image, but close enough to make for a fantastic double feature. However, much like Denzel Washington saw himself teased by a presence beyond our understanding, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man can identify with that very menace.
Though how these scenarios end for all in play is another big difference, you’ll just have to learn that knowledge for yourself! So if you’re heading out to see “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in theaters, don’t forget to include “Fallen” in your plans – as it streams with a Netflix subscription.
