In a touching display of community support, neighbors in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood have rallied around the Guthrie family amid the ongoing search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, who has been missing since late Jan. 31, 2026.

Residents have posted signs reading “Dear Guthrie family, your neighbors stand with you,” and volunteered to look for Nancy and assist however they can — a reminder of how closely knit the neighborhood has become as the case unfolds.
The sign was placed outside of Nancy’s home.
Shock and Support in a Quiet Community
As law enforcement continues its investigation and search efforts, neighbors have described a typically calm community shaken by the sudden disappearance and intense response by authorities, including helicopters and search teams.
But amid concern and uncertainty, their collective effort reflects hope, solidarity and genuine care for a neighbor and her family during a frightening time.

Many neighbors told reporters they were stunned by news of the Guthrie family’s ordeal, describing it as “scary” and unlike anything they’ve experienced in a neighborhood they view as safe and close-knit, according to Newsweek.
“I think everyone is just scared and worried about Nancy and hoping that she’s O.K.,” one neighbor told the outlet.
People said they exchange greetings regularly and look out for one another, but this situation has brought an unusual intensity to daily life as residents process both their worry and their desire to help.
Several have volunteered to help search the nearby desert terrain and surrounding areas where Nancy was last seen, and others have reviewed home security footage for any possible clues that could assist investigators.
Many have worked with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, responding to requests to share video from Ring cameras or other surveillance systems in hopes of uncovering even the smallest piece of evidence that could help locate her.
The Catalina Foothills Association reported that its phone lines and community channels have been active since the news broke, with neighbors calling in to ask how they can help or simply expressing their concern for a woman they know as kind and beloved, according to KOLD-TV.
Thomas Pew, communications chair for the association, noted how meaningful it is to live in a neighborhood where residents are willing to step up in a moment like this — offering not just practical assistance, but emotional support to one another.
Shared Concern and Hope
Despite their fear and shock, neighbors emphasize hope for Nancy’s safe return.
“We’re all praying for her and thinking about the family,” one resident said, echoing the sentiments of others who have reached out to the Guthries with cards, messages and offers of help.
Many have also shared that they keep their doors locked and eyes open, a reflection of how the incident has heightened community vigilance while reinforcing bonds among neighbors.
Neighbors also point out that although the circumstances of Nancy’s disappearance are deeply concerning, the outpouring of support — including signs, shared prayers and volunteers — shows the strength of a community coming together for one of their own.
As law enforcement continues its efforts and the search progresses, the neighbors’ unity remains a reassuring backdrop of hope and collective determination.
