‘New Girl’ Star Was Open to a Spin-Off—Then Something Happened: ‘I Am Unwell’

“New Girl” fans got an unexpectedly perfect crossover of nostalgia and breaking news thanks to Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone.

The former-co stars, who played Winston and Cece, respectively, on the beloved FOX sitcom, were in the middle of recording a segment of their “The Mess Around Podcast” when a casual conversation about a potential spin-off quickly turned into something else entirely.

What started as a fun “what if?” moment about revisiting one of the show’s most iconic couples suddenly became a real-time reaction to major career news for Max Greenfield—aka Schmidt himself.

During the episode, Morris posed a question to Simone: “Would you be down for a Schmidt and Cece spin-off?”

Simone didn’t hesitate.

“I for sure would,” she said. “I would do anything with Max.”

Morris added that he had recently seen Greenfield, teasing that things were going well for his former co-star.

“I just saw him recently and he looks great. Things are going great,” he said.

That’s when everything shifted.

Simone suddenly interrupted the conversation after spotting breaking news on her phone.

“Did you just see this? Holy [expletive]!” she said, holding up the Deadline article announcing Greenfield’s latest get.

Morris quickly clarified that this was exactly what he had been hinting at.

“That’s what I just said. I said things are going great. I’ll just leave it at that,” he joked.

Simone, clearly stunned, summed it up in real time: “My jaw.”

The news Simone had just discovered? Greenfield is officially headed to season 4 of HBO’s hit series, “The White Lotus,” a show known for its stacked casts and buzzy, career-defining roles. Deadline broke the news on March 17.

“‘White Lotus’? I am unwell,” Simone said. “That is the biggest, funnest show on earth.”

While celebrating her former co-star’s big moment, she also joked about what it could mean for their spin-off dreams.

“You’re never doing a Schmidt and Cece spin-off now,” she said. “I am so happy for you.”

Greenfield joins a long list of notable actors who have appeared on the murder mystery series, which has featured stars like Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza, Theo James, and Sydney Sweeney across its previous seasons. Each new installment of creator and director Mike White’s series typically brings a fresh ensemble cast, a new storyline, and a new luxurious White Lotus hotel location.

According to Deadline, Greenfield is believed to be playing a character named Mitchell, although no other details about the show on a plot level have been revealed. New season 4 cast members have been announced, however: Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennet, Charlie Hall, and Jarrad Paul.

Season 4 will be filmed in France.
