Rasmus Dahlin is a rising star in the NHL and plays for the Buffalo Sabres. He recently decided to discuss a very personal matter with Buffalo Sabres fans when he addressed his fiancée Carolina Matovac’s medical emergency, which happened while they were on vacation. She is 25.
Rasmus Dahlin Gives Update on His Fiancée’s Health
In an open letter posted on the Buffalo Sabres website, Dahlin opened up about what happened to Matovac over the summer. “While on vacation in France early this summer, Carolina began to feel sick for a few days, which quickly turned into her experiencing major heart failure,” Dahlin wrote. “Fortunately, she received CPR on multiple occasions, and up to a couple of hours at a time to keep her alive, which ultimately saved her life. Without her receiving lifesaving CPR, the result would have been unimaginable. It is hard to even think about the worst-case scenario.”
The CPR saved Matovac’s life, but it was just the beginning of her health emergency. Dahlin revealed she would spend weeks in the hospital on life support before she became “a beneficiary of a heart transplant.”
The couple is incredibly grateful for the medical attention Matovac was given and thanked the team involved in her care. “Without the incredible commitment, expertise, care, and sensitivity of all the people who treated Carolina, we would not be in the position that we are in today, with Carolina recovering well and on the path to a full recovery,” Dahlin wrote.
Dahlin updated fans on Matovac’s recovery and asked for continued privacy. But he also expressed his gratitude at how well she was doing. “While Carolina is still working through her rehab to return to be with me in Buffalo, she has demonstrated an incredible determination, spirit, positivity, and resilience that I am in awe of,” Dahlin wrote. “This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives. However, it is something that we have learned so much from.”
Fans Show Their Support
The letter was also shared on the Buffalo Sabres’ Instagram account on September 19. The post allowed fans to react in the comment section. “Thank you for sharing such a personal story and highlighting to others the importance of lifesaving CPR,” a comment reads.
“Wow how lucky to receive a heart transplant that is compatible soo fast!” another person shared.
Other reactions include, “We wish Carolina a speedy recovery,” “sending so much love & so many prayers!” and “Wishing her all the best moving forward.”
