Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, found himself at the center of an awkward moment during a high-profile holiday gathering hosted by Conan O’Brien, according to reports.
The incident, which took place at O’Brien’s annual Christmas party on Saturday, December 13, involved a brief but tense exchange between Nick Reiner and Bill Hader that ultimately led Nick Reiner to leaving the exchange angry, NBC News reported.
According to the outlet, Nick Reiner “interrupted a conversation involving comedian Bill Hader.”
“When Hader told him the conversation was private, the source said, Nick Reiner appeared to stand still and stare before ‘storming off,’” NBC News noted.
Hader was later spotted on Tuesday after the news of their interaction broke.
He was seen outside of his home on the phone, according to Page Six.
Nick Reiner Also Had an Argument With His Parents
Prior to Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, being found dead at their Los Angeles home on Sunday, they also got into an argument with their son at the party, according to reports.
“They had had an argument at Conan’s holiday party, and Rob had been telling people that they’re scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating,’’ a family friend told The New York Post.
TMZ added it was a “very loud argument,” which was “loud enough for many others to hear.”
Though it remains unclear what the argument was about, another family friend added that Rob and Michele wanted Nick to return to rehab, according to the Post.
“I know [the parents] wanted him to get help, go to rehab, but he wanted to get help while at home — he did not want to get treatment at a facility,” the friend added.
“We’re told Rob and Michele then left the party,” TMZ added. “We do not know if Nick left as well.”
Nick later checked into The Pierside Santa Monica hotel around 4 a.m. and left at an unknown time.
Nick Reiner Is Arrested
He was arrested on Sunday evening, with the Los Angeles Police Department putting out a statement the following day.
“As a result of the initial investigation, it was determined that the Reiners were the victims of homicide,” it stated. “The investigation further revealed that Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Robert and Michele Reiner, was responsible for their deaths. Nick Reiner was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m.”
It added that he was being held without bail.
Rob Reiner was a multitalented actor and director. He directed hits such as “Stand By Me,” “When Harry Met Sally…,” and “Spinal Tap.”
In addition to Nick, Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner had two addition children together.
Rob Reiner also had a daughter named Tracy with his ex-wife Penny Marshall.
