Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were tragically killed on Sunday, December 14, following an argument with their son Nick Reiner during a holiday party at Conan O’Brien’s home, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Nick Reiner was taken into custody on Sunday evening by the Los Angeles Police Department, according to the outlet, and was being held on $4 million bail.
“Family friends told The Times that Rob and Nick got into an argument on Saturday evening at a party at Conan O’Brien’s home and that many people noticed Nick acting strangely at the party,” the Los Angeles Times reported.
TMZ reported that Reiner and his wife were in attendance at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday night with their son Nick, and during the party, the actor and Nick got into a “very loud argument,” that was ” loud enough for many others to hear.”
“We’re told Rob and Michele then left the party,” they added. “We do not know if Nick left as well.”
This happened a day before two bodies were found inside the home of Rob Reiner, which were later confirmed to be him and his wife, with the two having suffered “lacerations consistent with a knife.” PEOPLE was the first to report that the two were killed by their son, Nick, going on to add that it was Rob and Michele’s daughter, Romy, who discovered their bodies.
Michele Singer Reiner Opened Up About Her Son’s Struggles Before Her Passing
GettyTMZ also included an update from a family source, who told the outlet that Michele had recently been struggling with her son’s substance abuse issues.
“Michele had been anguishing to friends over the last few months that she and Rob were at their wits’ end over Nick’s mental illness and alleged substance abuse issues, and did not know what to do with their son Nick saying, “We’ve tried everything,” the outlet wrote.
Nick co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie”, which was directed by Reiner, and was based on his drug addiction and homelessness, which began in his teens.
Rob Reiner’s Daughter Tracy Breaks Silence Following Her Father’s Passing
Tracy is Reiner’s oldest daughter and she has now broken her silence following the deaths of her father and his wife.
“I came from the greatest family ever,” she told NBC News. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
The family also released a statement on Sunday night.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” his family said in a statement, via Variety.

My God, I have no words. My heart is so heavy. My father and I still watch All in the Family reruns. What an amazing career Rob had. I believe he wasn’t done yet. My sincerest condolences to all whose lives he touched. Man… So many of us…
Rob Reiner was an obnoxious, arrogant liberal. That said, my own son, now 43, went through terrible times. He had trouble in school, then got into drugs and he was off to the races. Once I was awakened about 1am by the Sherrif’s office asking if I knew where my car was. He had taken the car (no driver’s license!; he was only about 14 at the time). He turned the car over, with a friend in the car. And then they ran! That night was significant to me bc I spent years after that convinced that ONE DAY the police would be waking me up in the middle of the night w/final news.
I distanced myself. I would visit if he was in prison, gave him small amounts of $$ for his jail commisary. Would not pay for lawyers or bonds. He was arrested a final time after seriously beat a girl. But that seemed to be a turning point for him. He was sent a second time to a drug court program. There he met a younger lady. And they have built something positive. He has his own company, doing painting and pressure washing. He now has 3 kids and is providing a nice home for them all. I think they have been clean for 8 yrs now. But they both seem to know that they are only one drink, pill, or shot away from the same old thing. Those that love them, like myself, oftentimes must just let them find their own way.
As a parent of a recovering alcoholic/drug addict I absolutely agree with everything you said.
Did you know him personally, too make such a judgment call as you did? Or because he was Liberal? Shame on you!! I know who you support.
He was obnoxious, and I do t have a dog in the fight
Neither do I, and I agree although I don’t know why the poster felt the need to say that here.
Although I think that comment was not called for, I think the OP was referencing his outspoken views and hatred for Trump. Mr. Reiner certainly wasn’t shy about his disdain for Republicans in general. One didn’t have to know him personally- it was all over tv and the internet.
This is a time for mourning; not negative judgement. Your story has a happy ending. Let’s pray your family remains stable. I am so saddened by this news. This story can be the same for many other families with children suffering mental illness or drug addiction. I pray guns are taken off the streets and families do not deal with unnecessary violence.
“Guns off the Street” ???? I guess you’re sorry he was only stabbed otherwise it would help your ridiculous narrative……If they don’t have a gun, they can always use a knife, car, or whatever. Guns DO NOT kill people….. Generally, sociopaths kill people. The rest of your statement makes sense, with all the sociopaths around, I prefer to have my guns, second amendment and all……
Wow. Our first comment tells all we need to know about you and the rest of your “story” is not worth reading. May you grow a heart that God approves!
Good for you Lynn. I’m right there with you
So no one is allowed to have an opposing opinion without you berating him?
So, no one is allowed to have an opposing opinion that you don’t approve or agree with. So very sad your heart must be filled with hate just like Rob Reiner.
HE DIDNT TRY EVERYTHING THATS A LIE. HE SHOULD HAVE TRIED GOD BUT ALAS HE WAS AN ATHEIST. YES I LOVED MANY OF HIS MOVIES BUT IT DOES NOT CHANGE THE TRUTH.
Agree with you 100%
That is a terrible thing to say. You are an obnoxious human being. You have no right to judge other people. They did everything that most parents would do for there child. Just because you put distance between you and your son does not make it right. We all react differently. Have some compassion!
I lost my 35 year old son in 2013 from an overdose of China White. He wanted to be a jet pilot and at the age of 15 was told by another pilot that he was a natural, but drugs got in his way because his father, a marine vet from Vietnam, suffered a severe PTSD case.
My son was also a talented artist with pencil drawings and a drywall skill.
This is one of the reasons I am so excited that President Trump is going to save many lives.
Drugs should not ever be in America!!!!
Is he really. He is nothing but a hypocrite!
The fact you had to voice his political views First is disgusting . every family has someone who suffers from mental illness or substance abuse. No matter who you are you have someone in your family and you can relate. But the fact you still continue to point out his political views that has nothing to do with the fact of the situation is disturbing. You may need to go be checked. Instead, you should’ve just manifest it positive energy for his family.
He was an awesome actor. I loved the part he played; All in the Family. He was so funny with the other actors and actresses.
When I heard the news, what happened, I said to myself, I hope one of their kids didn’t do that.
Your brother killed your parents. I don’t think your family is as great as you think
Absolutely heartbreaking. God bless that shattered family.
Some of you should take the time to read Rob Reiner’s remarks when Charlie Kirk was killed. You might be surprised. His comments were on Huffington Post, look them up. No, he was not an atheist, he was of the Jewish faith, I pray that those of you that feel comfortable judging these people as parents never experience the heartache that they did as they faced the struggles of their adult child with mental health and addiction issues.
Absolutely a tragedy no matter how you look at it. The moment I heard the news I suspected their son was not in his right mind. Devastating for everyone in the family.
I knew it. I just knew from the moment the deaths were announced, that somehow, politics would intrude. It has nothing to do with what happened. That you and others believe it does, says something about you. Mental illness and addiction are a double-edged sword. The mental illness has to be addressed as well as the addiction. My condolences to the Reiner Family.
Absolutely. Mental illness and drug addiction. This is the moment we recognized the entire family and what they have lost. Six people are suffering. The parents Rob and Michelle, the son, Nick who is suffering from mental illness and drug abuse, and finally the remaining children Tracy, Romy, and Jake. I personally don’t care if they were not religious. I send prayers to each and everyone of them.
No one but the close family members know the true circumstances. Everyone can quarterback, comment, etc. The reality is, this happened…be kind with you thoughts…let the family go through this grievous situation and give them peace so they may move through privately.
Prayers for the Reiner family and friends. Nothing takes away the fact that 2 people were taken before their time and in a horrible manner.
