“And the winner is…”: The words every actor and filmmaker dreams of hearing are finally echoing across Hollywood tonight.
Even before host Conan O’Brien stepped onto the stage, this year’s Oscars had already made history. When nominations were revealed in January, the Southern vampire epic “Sinners” dominated the field with a remarkable 16 nominations. The film landed in several of the ceremony’s biggest categories, including best picture, best director, best actor, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress.
With that tally, “Sinners” set a new Oscars record for the most nominations ever received by a single film. It surpassed previous record holders “La La Land,” “Titanic,” and “All About Eve,” each of which earned 14 nominations.
GettyNot far behind was “One Battle After Another,” which collected 13 nominations. “Frankenstein” and “Sentimental Value” followed with nine nominations each, while “Hamnet” secured eight.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also introduced a new category this year, recognizing casting, marking the first time the craft has been honored with its own Oscar.
Tight Acting Races Made Several Categories Unpredictable
Several of the ceremony’s biggest acting categories entered the night without a clear frontrunner.
The best actor race, in particular, drew intense attention. Nominees Michael B. Jordan, Timothée Chalamet, and Wagner Moura each scored significant wins during the awards season circuit, making the outcome difficult to predict.
As nominees and industry leaders filled the Dolby Theatre, many of the top categories still felt wide open. In the end, the final decisions rested with the votes cast by members of the Academy.
