Longtime Journalist Announces CBS Exit: ‘This Is My Decision’

Veteran journalist Scott MacFarlane has decided to walk away from his current role at CBS amid an ongoing shakeup at the network.

MacFarlane, who first joined the network in 2021, announced the news publicly via X on Monday, March 9.

Scott MacFarlane Steps Down From CBS Job

MacFarlane shared the news with his colleagues on Monday, before going public with his announcement.

“To my incredible colleagues at CBS: I want to personally let you know that my work will soon no longer appear on CBS News,” MacFarlane began, resharing a message he shared with his colleagues earlier that day. “This is my decision, and I appreciate the bosses at CBS for understanding it.”

He continued, “I will always value the opportunity I had to work alongside the talented and committed professionals here. I’m proud to have had the words ‘CBS correspondent’ next to my name – always will be.”

While he did not specify his next career move, MacFarlane added, “For the next phase of my career, I look forward to some independence and finding new spaces to share my work in line with my personal goals. I thank you all. The work will not stop, and I’ll always be a call away.”

Scott MacFarlane Receives Tons of Support

MacFarlane’s tweet was flooded with well-wishes on his future endeavors.

“Best of luck, Scott. Eager to see what the next chapter brings,” one follower wrote.

“We will miss you, Scott. I will follow your work wherever you end up. You brought your enthusiasm and dedication to reporting to our DC bureau, the Hill & DOJ and made all of our broadcasts better. Thank you,” CBS colleague Margaret Brennan commented.

A third wrote, “Thank you for your fine work. Look forward to your next chapter.
CBS today is no longer the CBS we knew. This is THEIR loss.”

Ongoing CBS Shakeup

CBS has been in an apparent transition period for the network with the appointment of new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.

In addition to Weiss making decisions that push CBS News into a more central political position, according to The Los Angeles Times, the network announced in July 2025 that “Late Night With Stephen Colbert” was canceled.

According to the network, the decision was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.”

The long-running late-night talk show will come to an end after its current season wraps in May. The news shocked the industry, including host Stephen Colbert.

Anderson Cooper also recently announced he is walking away from CBS after years of reporting on “60 Minutes.”
