Ryan Gosling is one of the most beloved actors, in part due to roles in films such as “The Notebook,” “Drive,” and “Barbie.” Now, he has a new sci-fi movie, “Project Hail Mary,” releasing on March 20, and early reviews say it’s a slam dunk that shouldn’t be missed in theaters.
In additon to Gosling, “Project Hail Mary” stars Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, James Ortiz, Liz Kingsman, and Lionel Boyce. Duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed the upcoming Amazon MGM film.
‘Project Hail Mary’ Starring Ryan Gosling Has Solid Movie Reviews
Amazon MGM lifted the review embargo on the morning of March 10. So far, ahead of its release, the movie is a success when it comes to reviews from official critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently, it holds a 95% rating on the platform. This is based on 40 movie reviews. As of March 12, the film has a 96% rating based on 115 reviews.
One critic, Kevin Maher, praised Gosling’s role, saying, “Gosling is the sugar that helps the medicine go down. He hasn’t been this perfectly cast between roguish and ingenuous since La La Land in 2016.” He gave the movie four out of five stars.
Another reviewer, Pete Hammond, wrote for Deadline, “A movie made for IMAX, Project Hail Mary is mission accomplished, an entertaining and engaging piece of science fiction that suggests even though we may be worlds apart, in order to save us from ourselves, we must band together now more than ever.”
Andrew Webster from The Verge said, “It’s silly and heartfelt, tense and hopeful. It may be a seemingly odd mixture — but the strangest part of all is how well it all works.”
Lastly, Tim Grierson wrote, “The tonal balance between life-and-death stakes and buddy-comedy bonding is sometimes wobbly, but Ryan Gosling gives an open-hearted performance as our planet’s unlikely saviour.”
Social Media Also Loves the New Movie
Now that the embargo has been lifted, social media users who saw “Project Hail Mary” are also reacting. The HoloFiles X account said, “Project Hail Mary is a beautiful, heartwarming, and expertly crafted modern sci-fi epic. So much heart and humor, technically exquisite, and Ryan Gosling at his best, Lord & Miller’s new movie is a must-see.”
Another reviewer, Robert Daniels, said, “It appears I’m on the lower end of PROJECT HAIL MARY, a sci-fi adventure I found to be intermittently enjoyable, mostly because I could too easily see the seams of the emotional engineering at play.”
Another critic on X, Nadia Reviews, said, “PROJECT HAIL MARY is a wildly entertaining space epic that faces the unknown with luminous empathy.”
Regarding the movie’s production, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “Project Hail Mary” had a budget of more than $240 million. The big-budget film clocks in at 156 minutes.
