‘Wicked: For Good’ Debuts With Strong Reviews From Critics

“Wicked” was one of the biggest movies of 2024. Now, its sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” could do as well as, if not better than, the original. The Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-led film officially hits movie theaters on November 21. Ahead of its release, movie reviews are praising the film.

Like the first movie, Jon M. Chu directed “Wicked: For Good.” In addition to Erivo and Grande, it stars Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, and Colman Domingo.

‘Wicked: For Good’ Has Strong Audience Scores

The social media and audience review embargo for “Wicked: For Good” has been lifted. So far, it has an impressive 98% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Regarding social media, one person said on X about the film, “Wicked: For Good shines with breathtaking visuals, stirring music, and standout performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.”

The reviewer continued, “Although the story does not fully match the depth of the original, the film’s heart, world-building, and remarkable costume work keep it engaging. Imperfect yet unforgettable, it is a beautifully crafted return to Oz that is worth the journey.”

Someone else wrote, “Wicked: For Good defied my expectations as someone who doesn’t love the second half on stage. I was skeptical of the decision to split it into two films, but #WickedForGood is tonally and visually distinct. Impeccable performances and grand staging make it a delightful sequel.”

Critics Also Love the Film

The critical review embargo was lifted at 12:00 PM EST on November 18. So far, official critics are also praising the movie. It currently holds a 70 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic on the platform wrote, “Everything is stitched together beautifully to create an exhilarating piece of movie musical magic that re-invents the Golden Age.”

However, in a less-than-positive review on the platform, someone wrote, “Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo once again show off their incredible singing voices in Wicked For Good, but the film falls flat. It’s repetitive, uninspired, and quite dull.”

One of the movie reviewers from Dexerto said, “A triumph on multiple fronts; Wicked: For Good effortlessly combines music, dance, action, romance, and drama, while delivering major superhero thrills.” They gave it four out of five stars.

Variety said, “The thrillifying follow-up to last year’s incomplete musical hit fixes flaws in the Broadway show’s second act, elevating Cynthia Erivo, while sharpening its critique of those who lead by deception.”

Notable critic Jonathan Sim wrote, “WickedForGood is a powerful second act that won’t win over the naysayers, but any longtime fan will enjoy this film, particularly due to Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s phenomenal work.”
