As “The Studio” is getting ready for its second season, the Apple TV+ satire faces an emotional challenge: moving forward without Catherine O’Hara.
The Golden Globe-winning actress, beloved for her Emmy-nominated role in the show’s first season, passed away at age 71 from complications related to rectal cancer.
Rogen Opens Up About Season 2
Seth Rogen, co-creator and star of the series, confirmed that Season 2 will openly address her passing.
“It has been an unbelievable challenge,” he told The Times on Friday, April 3, reflecting on returning to the show after O’Hara’s death. “Obviously emotionally, dealing with the loss, but also when it comes to the show itself.”
He added, “We wrote it for her to be there. We had it all set and the shock waves permeate throughout the entire new season. It’s been difficult. You worded it better than we could — she was the anchor and now the anchor is gone.”
Rogen emphasized that while the series won’t dwell solely on grief, the impact of O’Hara’s absence will be felt throughout. “If anything, we’re acknowledging the idea that we are a little anchorless. But, honestly, that is a part of life and what we all experience.”
Rogen noted how there will have to be some heavy themes in the upcoming season. “And so while we try to not dwell too much on heavy themes in this show, they will be there in this second season. We are not ignoring it,” he continued.
Looking back on O’Hara’s performance in Season 1, which earned both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, Rogen added, “We just wanted her to think we were funny.”
Her comedic timing, warmth, and presence left a lasting mark on both her colleagues and audiences alike.
Rogen Accepted O’Hara’s Award on Her Behalf
Rogen paid tribute to O’Hara at an awards ceremony, accepting the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series on her behalf.
“I was asked to assume the very sad honor of accepting this award on O’Hara’s behalf. I know she would have been honored to receive this award from her fellow performers, who I know she respected so much. She was such a big fan of all of yours,” he said.
Reflecting on her legacy, Rogen added, “She really showed that you can be a genius and be kind, and one of those things does not have to come at the expense of the other in any way, shape or form.”
As Season 2 of “The Studio” approaches, O’Hara’s absence will be deeply felt, a reminder of the unique talent and heart she brought to the series.
