YouTube TV is getting a major upgrade, and it could completely change how viewers watch live TV at home. The streaming service is expanding its multiview feature beyond sports and giving subscribers more control over what appears on their screen at the same time.
The update was announced in a Jan. 21 letter from YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, who outlined the company’s biggest priorities for 2026. One of the standout reveals was confirmation that YouTube TV’s multiview experience will soon be fully customizable, a shift that longtime users have been asking for.
Instead of choosing from preset channel groupings, subscribers will be able to select any four channels they want to watch at once, per Men’s Journal. That means mixing news, sports, entertainment, or weather all on one screen, based entirely on personal preference.
A Multiview Upgrade That Goes Beyond Sports
YouTube TV first introduced multiview in 2023 as a sports-focused feature, allowing fans to watch up to four games simultaneously and switch audio between them. While the feature later expanded slightly, viewers were still limited to curated channel bundles chosen by the platform.
That restriction is finally going away. With the upcoming update, users will be able to build their own multiview layouts, choosing any combination of channels instead of relying on YouTube TV’s presets.
The change opens the door for a more flexible viewing experience. A viewer could watch a favorite show or movie while keeping an eye on live news, stock market updates, or weather alerts. It also makes shared viewing easier in households where people want different things on the screen at the same time.
For many users, this could mean fewer moments of scrolling on a phone while the TV plays in the background. Instead, everything stays visible in one place.
New Channel Plans Are Also on the Way
The multiview update is not the only change coming to YouTube TV in 2026. In his letter, Mohan also teased the launch of more than 10 new specialized channel plans spanning sports, entertainment, and news, per YouTube’s official blog.
Currently, YouTube TV offers a single all-in-one plan, which means subscribers often pay for channels they never watch. The upcoming genre-based plans are designed to give users more flexibility and control over what they are actually paying for.
While pricing and exact release dates have not yet been announced, YouTube TV has confirmed that both the customizable multiview feature and the new plan options are coming soon. According to Mohan, the goal is to make TV simpler and more personalized for modern viewers.
As YouTube continues to position itself as a major player in home entertainment, these updates signal a clear push toward flexibility, customization, and viewer control. Or as Mohan put it in his letter, the focus is on giving subscribers “more control” over how they watch TV.
