Chelsea Handler is stepping into a very on-brand role for her next act. The comedian revealed she will play a washed-up reality television star in the upcoming Hulu comedy “Townhouse,” joking on Instagram, “The rumors are true. I’m becoming a mother.”
According to Deadline, the series is in development at Hulu from writer Zoe Young and 20th Television, with Handler attached to star and executive produce. The comedy follows a former reality personality whose glamorous life has unraveled. Living in a crumbling Manhattan townhouse with a live-in entourage of eccentric helpers, the character attempts to rehab her public image and reboot her career. Things take a turn when her estranged daughter unexpectedly moves in, forcing the TV has-been to confront a role she has long avoided: motherhood.
Inside ‘Townhouse’ and the Inspiration Behind It
Page Six reports that “Townhouse” was penned by Young, a 2025 graduate of USC’s Writing for Screen & Television MFA program. Young previously worked as an intern for “Real Housewives of New York City” alum Sonja Morgan during the Bravo series’ final season in 2021. Morgan’s interns were frequently featured on the show, often tasked with unusual assignments inside her Upper East Side townhouse, which became a signature backdrop throughout her run.
While the premise has sparked comparisons to Morgan, insiders told Page Six the character is not a direct portrayal. Sources pushed back on the idea that Morgan is “washed up” or estranged from her daughter, describing her instead as loose inspiration rather than a template for the fictional lead.
Handler is no stranger to reality television herself. She previously executive produced the E! series “Pretty Wild” and appeared on Oxygen’s “Girls Behaving Badly.” She also hosted an episode of the Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett-produced competition series “On The Lot.”
From ‘Chelsea Lately’ to Multi-Platform Mogul

“Townhouse” marks another chapter in Handler’s evolving career. She first rose to prominence hosting “Chelsea Lately” on E! from 2007 to 2014, becoming one of the few women to helm a late-night talk show for seven years. Since leaving the nightly format, Handler has expanded into streaming with Netflix projects including “Uganda Be Kidding Me Live,” “Chelsea Does,” “Revolution” and 2025’s “The Feeling.”
She is also a seven-time New York Times bestselling author, most recently publishing “I’ll Have What She’s Having” in 2025, according to Dear Media. In recent years, she has hosted the Critics’ Choice Awards multiple consecutive times and became the first female comedian to hold a residency at The Chelsea Theater in Las Vegas. As of 2026, Handler is touring with her “High and Mighty Tour” and continues to host her advice podcast “Dear Chelsea,” while also pursuing business ventures and production projects.
For now, she seems ready to embrace her latest fictional role. As she put it on Instagram, “The rumors are true. I’m becoming a mother.”
