As the daughter of musician John Mellencamp, it’s not surprising to hear that Teddi Mellencamp has met quite an array of characters. The “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star has talked often about her close friendship growing up with “Southern Charm” star Shep Rose, but she recently dished about meeting Madonna and Sean Penn as a child. Unfortunately, it was under very embarrassing circumstances.
Teddi Mellencamp Met Hollywood Royalty Under Parental Wrath
Getty“Sean Penn and Madonna were staying at our house,” Mellencamp told PEOPLE. “I went to go riding my horse in the morning, and my dad was like, ‘Okay, be back in three hours.’ Three hours as a kid [goes by fast], so all of a sudden I see his car pulling into the barn where I was riding probably six hours later. I could tell on his face he was pissed.”
“He didn’t talk to me at all in the car,” she said. “I’m sitting there wondering, ‘What’s he going to say? What’s he going to do?’ Then he walks me right up to where we’re having dinner, and he’s like, ‘Wash your hands, then sit down and have dinner with us.’ And in front of everybody, he says, ‘I’m taking your birthday away.'”
Not exactly how any child of the ’80s would want their first introduction to Madonna and Sean Penn to go. Mellencamp was able to put the mortifying incident behind her and now has a great story to tell.
How Teddi Mellencamp’s Father Became Her Daily Cheerleader Amidst Cancer Scare
Mellencamp’s life has been a rollercoaster since her stage 4 cancer diagnosis in April 2025. After battling stage 2 melanoma for three years, the discovery that it had metastasized to her brain and lungs was devastating.
She recalled feeling intense headaches, so she went to the ER. “Within 12 hours I was having brain surgery,” she said. While she’s had many people to lean on, such as close friend Kyle Richards, she counts her dad as one of her biggest cheerleaders.
“He’s consistent,” she revealed. “Every day since I’ve been in the hospital, he’s called me. Even on the days that I don’t want to answer the phone, even on the days that I feel like I can’t do anything, I know that he’s going to call and I have the choice to answer or not. But either way, he’s been so uplifting. He’s like, ‘You can do this and you’re a fighter.’ He likes to say, ‘You’re a Mellencamp. Mellencamps can do anything.'”
