Anthony Geary, the actor who brought Luke Spencer to life on ABC’s “General Hospital” for nearly four decades, died on Sunday, Dec. 14, at age 78, following complications from surgery, according to a report from TV Insider. His husband, Claudio Gama, confirmed the news, calling the loss “a shock” for their family and friends.
For generations of viewers, Geary was synonymous with Luke Spencer, a character whose storylines helped shape the history of daytime television. Though Geary officially retired from full-time work in 2015 and last appeared on the show in 2017, Luke’s presence continued to loom large — both within the narrative and among fans who never truly let the character go.
Anthony Geary’s Lasting Legacy as Luke Spencer on ‘General Hospital‘
Geary first stepped into the role of Luke Spencer in 1978, expecting it to be a short-term gig. Instead, Luke quickly became one of the most recognizable characters in daytime television. His on-screen relationship with Laura Collins, played by Genie Francis, turned into a pop culture moment that reached far beyond soap fans.
Luke and Laura’s wedding, which aired on Nov. 17, 1981, was watched by more than 30 million viewers. It remains the most-watched episode in soap opera history and is often credited with saving “General Hospital” and helping spark the soap boom of the 1980s.
As the years went on, Luke evolved from a charming con artist into a businessman and even a political figure, with Geary guiding the character through every phase. His performance earned him a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards, a testament to his lasting impact on the genre.
Geary briefly stepped away from “General Hospital” in the late 1980s but returned in 1991 in a dual role, initially portraying Luke’s cousin Bill Eckert before reclaiming the Luke Spencer mantle full-time in 1993. He remained a central figure on the show until announcing his retirement in 2015.
How ‘General Hospital’ Handled Luke Spencer After Geary’s Exit
Although Geary left the series, Luke Spencer never truly disappeared from the world of “General Hospital.” After his final on-screen appearance in 2017, the character lived off-screen, referenced frequently by other characters and woven into ongoing storylines.
That chapter officially closed in 2022, according to People, when the show revealed that Luke had died in a cable car accident overseas. The revelation came during a New Year’s Day episode, with Tracy Quartermaine, played by Jane Elliott, delivering the news on screen.
The decision marked the end of an era, but it also underscored just how important Luke Spencer remained to the show’s identity. Even years after Geary’s departure, the character’s fate was treated with care and emotional weight.
Following Geary’s death, “General Hospital” executive producer Frank Valentini released a statement expressing heartbreak on behalf of the entire cast and crew, reflecting the deep respect Geary earned throughout his career.
After retiring, Geary moved from Los Angeles to Amsterdam, where he built a quieter life away from the spotlight. He married Gama in 2020 and largely stayed out of the public eye, though his influence on daytime television never faded.
Geary is survived by his husband, Gama, who told TV Insider, “It was a shock for me and our families and our friends. For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”
