Hayden Panettiere tragically passed away at the age of 36 on Sunday, August 16. But according to the late “Ice Princess” actress, her doctor shared a grim prediction before her death.
Doctor’s Prediction
The child star opened up about her alcohol abuse issues in her May 2026 memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.”
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: addicts aren’t patient,” Panettiere wrote, according to People. “When we’re shaking, nauseated, anxious, lonely, or depressed, we need instant relief that sends us into that pain-free place called denial.”
She went on to explain that alcohol helped her feel numb to everything she was trying to avoid.
“In the [expletive] zone, I forgot everything: Brian’s abuse, Kaya’s absence, and a career I’d chosen to hide from. Leaving acting hadn’t been a conscious decision; it simply happened,” she wrote. “Alcohol let me say [expletive] it, I’ll deal with everything later,’ and within thirty seconds, I was in the zone. It was like coming up for air and breathing again.”
Panettiere added, “As my nervous system tried to regulate itself without the depressant effects of alcohol, it went into overdrive, and my whole body shook. I couldn’t sleep, and my head pounded like it was pressing against my skull.”
The “Bring It On: All Or Nothing” actress continued, “At least my eyes aren’t yellow, I told myself. A doctor told me that if I didn’t stop drinking, I’d be dead within five years.”
Amid her journey to sobriety, following the doctor’s grim prediction, she “heard voices” and experienced panic attacks.
“Once during withdrawal, I heard voices that were so terrifying I got on all fours and crawled to my bathroom, where I lay on the cool, clean tiles and waited for the panic to pass,” she wrote, per People. “Two weeks in, I started to feel calm.”
Hayden Panettiere’s Death
Six years after entering treatment for alcohol abuse, Panettiere was found dead inside a Greenville, South Carolina, apartment. It was later revealed that her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson, as well as his brother Zach Hickerson, was present at the time.
While the initial autopsy did not find any signs of foul play, Panettiere’s cause of death is still under investigation.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the “Nashville” artist’s father, Skip Panettiere, said following his daughter’s passing. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
Panettiere is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former partner Wladimir Klitschko.
“Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief,” Klitschko shared via Instagram on Tuesday, August 18. “The announcement of Hayden’s tragic death saddens me deeply. She left this world far too soon. Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya.”
He added, “To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was.”
