Prince Harry and King Charles reunited at Clarence House this week for the first time in nearly two years — and their meeting may not have happened without one of the monarch’s most trusted allies.
Theo Rycroft’s Role In King Charles And Prince Harry Reunion
According to the Scottish Daily Express, the tea between Charles and Harry was orchestrated in part by Theo Rycroft, the King’s new deputy private secretary. Insiders claim Rycroft’s steady hand and softer diplomatic approach helped create the conditions for the father-son meeting, which lasted just under an hour.
Rycroft, a former British diplomat who once served as Minister and Deputy Head of Mission in Paris, joined the King’s private office in February alongside Sir Clive Alderton. Unlike Alderton, who Prince Harry nicknamed the “Wasp” in his memoir “Spare,” Rycroft has been described as approachable and pragmatic.
“He’s a terrific appointment, bringing a wealth of experience from his time in Paris — not least helping with the phenomenal success of Their Majesties’ crucial State Visit to France,” a source told the Daily Mail at the time of his hiring.
Rycroft’s résumé includes senior roles at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and a post as Legal Adviser to the Prime Minister at No. 10 Downing Street. He is married to Hon Flora Astor, whose family remains one of the most prominent names in both British and American society.
Prince Harry’s Solo Trip Signals Possible Thaw
Harry’s September visit to the U.K. marked a turning point in tone compared to his recent trips tied to court cases and legal battles.
Traveling without Meghan Markle, Prince Archie, or Princess Lilibet, the Duke of Sussex leaned into his royal patronages with fresh enthusiasm.
At the WellChild Awards in London on September 8, Harry hugged families and cracked jokes with children, before heading to Nottingham the following day where he danced with young activists at a community studio.
“He’s still the same person,” said CRS’s Trevor Rose. “He wants to feel the energy here. He cares — and that’s the main thing.”
That energy carried into Clarence House on September 10, where Harry met his father for a private tea. Queen Elizabeth’s former spokeswoman Ailsa Anderson told People, “It’s a massive step in the right direction. It’s a building of trust.”
Both Buckingham Palace and Harry’s team confirmed the meeting took place but offered no further comment.
