Why Heartthrob Adam Levine Says He Went ‘Insane’ This Season on ‘The Voice’

Adam Levine finally got his country artist on “The Voice” and it caused him to go “fully insane.”

The Voice: Battle of Champions” coach and Maroon 5 frontman has said many times that after years of losing country artists to Blake Shelton during the Blind Auditions, he’s desperate for a country artist of his own.

On night two of the Blind Auditions, 22-year-old Hunter Jordan of Maysville, Kentucky sang Billy Currington’s “Let Me Down Easy,” and earned the coveted Triple Turn, a new Season 29 twist that rewards the coach who secures the most three-chair artists with a Super Steal advantage in the Battle Rounds.

It was then up to Levine and fellow coaches John Legend and Kelly Clarkson to battle one another over the singer.

How Levine Convinced Jordan to Join His Team

“Kelly’s got this smile on her face like she’s already won,” said Legend as they began pitching themselves.

Previously, Jordan said backstage that, “[Clarkson] is who I’d want to be my Coach, for sure. Kelly has always been my favorite since she was on the show.” He also pointed out her successful track record. “She’s won four times! You can’t argue with four.”

But Levine stood and proclaimed that “Today is the day!” he would finally get a country singer.

“I’m not Captain Country, I’m not Blake, I’m Admiral Country,” Levine told Jordan. “You’re gonna break the mold because you are finally gonna do what no country singer has ever done before.” Levine argued that choosing Team Adam would “shake things up” and that he’d have a “bigger career” because fans would be intrigued by them as an “odd couple.”

“Oh wait, odd couple? Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, odd couple. Country, not country, it worked,” Levine said.

After Levine’s pitch, Clarkson pointed out that she was the coach with the most wins, encouraging Jordan to explore other genres, too. “Don’t close yourself off. I’d love to coach you, I’m a fan, but go ahead, John,” said Clarkson.

“Soul music, country music, blues music, rock music, those genres blend into each other,” argued Legend.

“I thought about this decision for a long time,” said Jordan, before announcing, “I think I’m gonna blaze a path with Adam.”

Levine was so excited that he bolted out of his chair and did a somersault onto the stage.

“I went fully insane over Hunter because he deserves it, but also because I had to go turbo because I always lose country Artists,” Levine said after his victory. “I went hard, I got him.”

Levine was one of the show’s original coaches, serving for 16 seasons before stepping away in May 2019, according to PEOPLE. “I am truly honored to have been a part of something I’ll always cherish for the rest of my life,” he wrote on Instagram at the time. “For me, it was time to move on. What an amazing ride.”

Later that year, Levine elaborated on his decision during an appearance on “The Howard Stern Show.”

“This was the right time for me to go,” Levine said. “For eight-and-a-half years, I was so busy. I was beyond fortunate to go through all of it because it was a life-altering experience being on that show … and then it got to the point where I got married, I had two kids, and I wanted to spend time with them.”

During his original run, Levine made history in Season 1 when his contestant, Javier Colon, became the show’s very first winner. The singer went on to snag two more victories with Tessanne Chin in Season 5 and Jordan Smith in Season 9.

Levine briefly reclaimed his coaching spot for Season 27 in February 2025. “I honestly feel like the stars aligned,” he told PEOPLE of his return. “It was one of those moments where we started talking about it, and it felt right … and it hadn’t felt right until now.”

He sat out Season 28 when he went on tour with Maroon 5 following the release of their eighth studio album, “Love Is Like,” in August 2025. Now, he’s officially back for Season 29, which premiered on Feb. 23. For the first time this season, there are just three coaches instead of four, and each will build a team of 10 artists.

“I’m back for my 18th season, and I haven’t lost my stuff. I’m still crushing it,” Levine told NBC in February 2026. “I am a piece of the show’s long lineage, so therefore, I feel like I always have an advantage.”
