Miley Cyrus is dedicating her new single “Secrets” to her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, and shared a heartfelt message on social media. The former coach on “The Voice” took to Instagram to share a clip of the “Secrets” video, and penned an emotional caption about it.
“This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved,” Cyrus wrote. “In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same.”
She added, “This song is for my dad.”
The pop star collaborated with Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood and Lindsay Buckingham on the track, and she expressed her gratitude to the iconic musicians as well, thanking them “for bringing magic to the music.”
Miley Cyrus Revealed the Meaning of ‘Secrets’
During the June 10 episode of the “Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky” podcast, Cyrus explained the origin of the song in more depth. “I wrote this song about my dad, because I wanted him to tell me even though there were secrets, even though I didn’t really want to know,” she said.
Cyrus continued, “I wanted to be the one he felt safe enough to tell me the things that were damning and damaging to the family. I wanted him to think that as a middle child, I’m old enough that I could take some of that.”
Rumors swirled that Cyrus and her father were feuding after she didn’t attend his 2023 wedding and didn’t thank him in her Grammy acceptance speech in 2024. But the singer maintained that it was blown out of proportion.
During an episode of David Letterman’s Netflix series “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” Cyrus said she and her father were not estranged and “it’s just the way things are played.”
Billy Ray Cyrus Showed His Appreciation for His Daughter
On August 25, Cyrus’ dad, musician Billy Ray Cyrus, showed his love and appreciation for his daughter. In a sweet Instagram post, he shared that Cyrus had given him the song for his birthday, which was clearly very special to him.
“For my birthday, Miley gave me the gift of music and wrote me a song called Secrets and got my favorite musicians Fleetwood Mac to play on it! I love you Mile ❤️,” the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer captioned a video of himself outdoors, smiling and playing “the new song. “Secrets.”
Cyrus shared that part of growing up for her has involved seeing her parents as human beings with lives of their own. The singer told The New York Times in May, “‘Yes, that’s your dad, but that’s just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.’ My child self has caught up.”
