The passing of Liam Payne remains a profound and heavy weight on the hearts of those who shared his journey from the beginning. For “The Voice” coach Niall Horan, the heartache is especially sharp, anchored to a final, bittersweet memory that feels increasingly difficult to come to terms with.
GettyNiall Horan rose to global fame as a member of One Direction, the chart-topping boy band formed on “The X Factor” in 2010. Alongside Liam Payne and their bandmates, the group became one of the best-selling acts of its generation, releasing five successful albums and building a bond that extended far beyond the stage.
GettyIn a new interview with GQ Hype published today, March 19, 2026, Horan shared the bittersweet details of his time with Payne just days before the tragedy.
Niall Horan Opens Up About Seeing Liam Payne Days Before His Death
The two musicians met backstage during Horan’s sold-out show at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires. Payne had traveled to Argentina specifically to see his former bandmate perform on October 2, 2024. The reunion was filled with the kind of ease that only long-term friends share.
GettyReflecting on that final encounter, Horan noted that the atmosphere was lighthearted. “It was great,” Horan recalled. “[He] seemed in good form and we had a good laugh, good reminisce.”
GettyThe two quickly fell back into their old rhythm, catching up as if no time had passed since their days in One Direction.
The Unthinkable Shock of a Sudden Departure
The memory of that night has since taken on a devastating emotional weight. Just two weeks later, on October 16, 2024, Payne died after falling from a balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires. He was only 31 years old.
Horan vividly remembered the exact moment the news reached him. He described a sense of total disbelief that initially blocked out the reality of the situation. “I just remember getting a message. And I was just like, What?… I just didn’t think it was real,” he admitted.
The singer struggled to reconcile the vibrant person he had just hugged with the headlines he was seeing.
“Someone so young, you’re not expecting to hear that they’ve passed, especially someone that you’ve just seen,” Horan told GQ.
The proximity of their meeting made the news feel even more impossible to grasp, transforming a joyful reunion into a heartbreaking final goodbye.
Processing the Waves of Complicated Grief
GettyAs the initial shock of losing a friend began to settle, Horan found himself moving through a wave of emotions that felt anything but steady. Grief came in shifts, each one bringing a different response to the loss of someone he had shared so much with.
“I just went back from shock to sadness to anger,” Horan said.
In the days that followed, he was constantly reminded of their past. Old photos and videos resurfaced, bringing back memories of their early years together and making the loss feel even more personal.
To cope, Horan chose to step away from the public eye for a time. After attending Payne’s funeral, he said he “went into hiding a little bit,” taking space to process the weight of the moment and the emotions that came with it.
Channeling Loss into Musical Tribute
Horan has also found a deeply personal way to keep his friend close, turning to music as a form of remembrance. On his upcoming album “Dinner Party,” he revealed that a track titled “End of an Era” was written as a tribute to Payne.
The song reflects on the bond they shared and the pain of a goodbye that came far too soon. Its lyrics carry a quiet weight, capturing both gratitude and loss in the same breath.
“Remember what it was like, time passes so fast, and I couldn’t tell you goodbye.”
Through the track, Horan revisits the years that shaped them, from their early days as teenagers on “The X Factor” to the life they built together in the spotlight.
Julian Bunetta, who co-wrote the song and worked closely with the band over the years, acknowledged the emotional difficulty behind it.
He noted that stepping into such a personal space was not easy, but Horan chose to face it head-on, using his music to preserve both the memory and the meaning of their friendship.
A Legacy of Shared Experiences
GettyWhile much of the world saw them as chart-topping stars, Horan said the connection within One Direction went far deeper than what fans witnessed. It was a shared experience that only the five of them could fully understand.
Looking back, he recalled the early days of their journey, including the time he and Payne spent sharing a room as their lives began to change.
“I just got to know him a little bit, and then we ended up doing what we did together,” he said.
Horan has remained especially protective of the quieter moments they experienced away from the spotlight.
Despite being surrounded by teams and constant attention, he said there was a side of their bond that belonged only to them.
“Memories that only he and I can share ’cause you have a team and you have people around all the time, but we always said that only us have that experience, no one else has that.”
As fans continue to grieve, Horan’s words offer a more intimate glimpse into who Payne was beyond the stage. Through both his memories and his music, he is holding on to the moments they shared, including that final night filled with laughter.
