The wildfire storyline continues to reshape Hope Valley in “When Calls the Heart” season 13, episode 3. After episode 2 of the Hallmark Channel staple put the town on high alert as flames threatened homes and safety, the next chapter turns to recovery — while also digging deeper into what sparked the disaster in the first place.
Titled “Back to School,” the episode brings change to Elizabeth’s classroom as the community works to stabilize after the emotional emergency.
Episode 2 Recap: Hope Valley Rallies During the Wildfire Crisis
Season 13, episode 2, “Up in Smoke,” delivered one of the most intense episodes the show has aired in years, with a wildfire threatening Hope Valley and the newly opened Goldie National Park. Erin Krakow, who plays Elizabeth Thatcher, told Soaps.com the storyline may have been inspired by real events.
“I believe that [the episode] may have been partially inspired by that situation,” Krakow said, referencing the Los Angeles fires. She also acknowledged the episode could be “challenging to watch” for viewers impacted by wildfires. It is an action-packed, drama-filled, emotional episode that we start to see a bit of at the end of episode 1, but we really dig into it in episode 2,” she continued.
In the episode, the town unites quickly, stepping in to fight the flames and help neighboring communities. Hope Valley opens its doors to families displaced by the crisis, becoming a safe place for those forced to leave their homes behind.
“There is this horrendous fire, and we see Hope Valley open their arms to a neighboring town to really provide a safe haven for them and be not just a community for each other, but for an entire other town,” Krakow teased, adding that the episode served as an indirect “love letter” to Los Angeles.
Krakow also reflected on one of the standout lines in the episode: “We will rebuild, but first we have to mourn.”
“I think that quote holds a lot of truth,” she explained. “Even if you’ve never been through a fire, there’s something that’s very relatable about it.”
