One week today, on Thursday, September 10, “Practical Magic 2” will hit theaters in the United States.
The sequel to 1998’s romantic fantasy movie “Practical Magic” sees Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock reprising their roles as witch sisters Gillian “Gilly” Owens and Sally Owens, respectively.
Per IMDb, the plot of the highly anticipated follow-up film is as follows: “A multi generational family of witches, cursed to be loveless for centuries, attempts to break the spell by confronting dark secrets and sacrificing for each other.”
For this one, Kidman and Bullock will be joined by an impressive supporting cast that includes Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, Solly McLeod, Dianne Wiest, and Stockard Channing.
In a recent chat with People, Kidman and Bullock explained why 2026 — some 28 years after the original film — was the right time to make a sequel to “Practical Magic.”

GettyIn their chat with People — or, more specifically, to each other, with the popular publication overseeing proceedings — Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock explained why now felt like the right time to make “Practical Magic 2.”
Bullock began the exchange by saying, “All right. Nicole, thank you for being here today. You want to go first?”
Kidman responded by saying “Okay. Why was now the right time for a ‘Practical Magic’ sequel?”
The answer given by “Speed” star Bullock was great. She said, “For me, it sort of honored generations of ancestry and future generations in a way that I don’t think we’ve talked about much on film. Which is, we forget that our mothers and grandmothers were young women with dreams and hopes and desires as well. And we never looked at them as human beings like that. They were just Mom and Grandma. So in this, we get to look behind the curtain and go, ‘I didn’t know you felt that way, I didn’t know you were longing.'”
“Eyes Wide Shut” star Kidman then elaborated. She said, “I remember being on the phone and we were like, ‘Okay, what’s the story? Why should we make it?’ And we just started riffing. A lot of it was based on how every family carries something and how do you deal with it and remove the patterns that have been existing for so long from generation to generation? As sisters, we were both like, “Oh yeah, you now carry the family as people pass and move on.” That was something that I so related to.”
Bullock added, “Well, you’re carrying the family forward. And I think sage witches, sage women, aunts, mothers, grandmothers have never gotten the full credit that they deserved. I look up a lot and apologize. A lot.”
“Now I understand,” replied Kidman.

Kidman responded, “Our quiet conversations.”
Bullock agreed, replying, “Yes. This time around, we got to share things… We’re each other’s life raft.”
The chat then ended on a mysterious note, as Kidman replied, “And then…” before motioning to zip her lips closed, to which Bullock replied, “Yeah.”
Kidman & Bullock Have Had Very Differing Recent Careers
Prior to “Practical Magic 2,” Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s recent careers have differed greatly from each other.
In 2026 alone, Kidman has appeared in the likes of the television shows “Lioness,” “Scarpetta,” and “Margo’s Got Money Troubles.” Her other recent credits include the 2025 psychological thriller “Holland” and drama series “Nine Perfect Strangers.”
For Bullock, on the other hand, “Practical Magic 2” will be her first acting credit since the 2022 film “Bullet Train.” The star has, of course, been focusing on looking after her children since the sad passing of her partner Bryan Randall due to ALS in 2023.
