PHOTO: Leonardo DiCaprio Pops Backstage at Broadway Show to Congratulate His Friend & Star of the Show

A little star power lit up Broadway this weekend and it came with a heartfelt show of support.

Leonardo DiCaprio stepped out in New York City to catch a performance of “The Fear of 13,” the gripping limited-run play starring Adrien Brody and Tessa Thompson. After the curtain fell, the Oscar winner made his way backstage to personally congratulate the cast — and celebrate his longtime friend Brody.

According to a source, DiCaprio was so moved by the performance that he asked the entire cast to snap a photo with him on his phone; a genuine moment that perfectly captured the night’s energy.

A Riveting Story Demands Attention

“The Fear of 13,” which opened April 15, 2026, at the James Earl Jones Theatre, is already making waves for its emotional depth and real-life inspiration.

The play tells the story of a man on death row and a volunteer who forms an unexpected connection with him. It’s based on the true story of Nick Yarris, who spent 22 years on Pennsylvania’s death row for a crime he did not commit.

Playwright Lindsey Ferrentino emphasized the weight of the story, noting that its truth is what makes it so powerful.

“If I made up Nick’s story, no one would believe it,” she shared in an interview with People. “Truth is stranger than fiction.”

The True Story: From Tragedy to Justice

Yarris’ story is as remarkable as it is heartbreaking. Arrested at just 20 years old, he became entangled in a case that would change his life forever.

In a desperate attempt to reduce his sentence, he provided information about a separate crime — a decision that ultimately led investigators to focus on him as a suspect.

Years later, his persistence paid off. Yarris was among the first to push for DNA testing, long before it became standard practice. In 2003, those court-ordered tests proved his innocence and saved his life.

The production, adapted from a documentary and memoir, also partners with The Innocence Project, further highlighting its commitment to justice reform.

The Broadway run represents a major milestone for both Brody and Thompson, as it serves as their Broadway debut. Their performances have already sparked buzz for their intensity and emotional range.

Adding to the excitement, Kim Kardashian recently joined the project as a producer, continuing her advocacy for criminal justice reform.

Kardashian posted to Instagram: “Criminal justice reform has been a deeply personal mission of mine. I’ve seen firsthand how the system can fail, and I’ve committed myself to fighting for those who have been silenced.”

She added, “That’s why I am so proud to join the producing team of the Fear of 13 on Broadway.”

For DiCaprio, the night was about showing up and celebrating powerful storytelling. While he has yet to take the Broadway stage himself, his presence backstage spoke volumes. With a limited run through July 12, “The Fear of 13” is quickly becoming one of the season’s most talked-about productions — and moments like this only add to its momentum.
