Appearing on Broadway is a goal for many actors, even if they’ve been in big-budget movies and television shows. Now, the latest actor to make the leap to “the great white way” is none other than Marvel star Simu Liu, who is joining the cast of “Oh, Mary!
According to Deadline, the producers behind “Oh, Mary!” announced that Liu was joining the cast on December 16. He’s joining the show as Mary’s Teacher, with dates going from February 3 until April 21. The production team also announced that some current cast members have extended their contracts.
They are John-Andrew Morrison, Jenn Harris, and Tony Macht. They play the husband, the chaperone, and the husband’s assistant, respectively. Fans can see the show at the Lyceum Theatre. Regarding “Oh, Mary”: the play is a dark comedy that offers an unorthodox view of Mary Todd Lincoln. It opened in July 2024.
It was also recently announced that John Cameron Mitchell will take on the role of Mary Todd Lincoln from February 3 to April 26.
‘Oh, Mary!’ Has Other Casting News
Liu isn’t the only notable actor joining the cast of “Oh, Mary!” on Broadway. The producers behind the show announced in December 2025 that John Cameron Mitchell would be playing Mary Todd Lincoln. The run will last from February 3, 2026, until April 26, 2026.
The official “Oh, Mary,” Instagram account said, “Sensational! ⭐️ John Cameron Mitchell will return to Broadway as Mary Todd Lincoln in OH, MARY! for a limited 12-week engagement beginning Tuesday, February 3, 2026.”
Mitchell later reacted to the news. Per an Instagram post, “Basking in the glow of our @ohmaryplay announcement today. Mary here i come! And btw, were @msambermartin and I ever so young? Four shows with a #MichelinStar dinner at @timessquareedition tomorrow and saturday night. See link in bio!! Plus my online writing class sat and sunday aftn!!”
“Oh, Mary” is a certified hit on Broadway. This is so much so that, according to Deadline, it broke a house record in terms of box office in June 2025. For the week ending June 15, it grossed $1,354,841. Its previous peak was December 2024, when it earned $1,348,939.
Liu Has Multiple Projects in the Works
Liu is most certainly hard at work preparing for his Broadway debut. However, the “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star is also a busy actor outside of that. Notably, he’s reprising his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday.”
He told ScreenRant of joining the cast, “I mean, there are just so many actors in it, and getting to work with those people as peers is really incredible because I grew up watching so many of them. It feels, in a lot of ways, like a love letter to the entire genre of superhero movies. And I think there’s something really fun about that.”
Regarding who the film is for, he said it’s “for all the misfits and the weirdos and the underdogs that grew up reading comic books and feeling like there was hope for them somehow – that it didn’t matter if they didn’t fit in – I think there’s just always a special place in my heart for that entire genre.”
“Avengers: Doomsday” hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
