’90s Country Star Released From Hospital After Health Scare

Country music star Mark Chesnutt is back home in Texas following a hospital stay that forced him to cancel multiple performances over the weekend.

Medical personnel released the 62-year-old ’90s hitmaker from a Baton Rouge hospital on Sunday, October 19, after admitting him several days earlier for medical concerns.

Chesnutt’s publicist, Don Murry Grubbs, confirmed the singer’s release in an email statement to Classic Country Music.

The update brought relief to fans who had been concerned about the beloved artist’s well-being after his sudden hospitalization.

His management team shared the news on social media Monday morning, October 20, thanking supporters for their prayers and positive thoughts.

Mark Chesnutt’s Medical Condition & Treatment

“Mark was released from hospital yesterday,” Grubbs stated. “He’s home in Beaumont, Texas and will see his doctor first thing Monday morning for testing comparisons. After they get the low sodium and high blood pressure under control, he’ll be good to go.”

Medical personnel initially admitted Chesnutt to a Baton Rouge hospital on Thursday, October 16, just hours before organizers scheduled him to open for Alabama at the Raising Cane’s River Center. His management described the reason for hospitalization as “low sodium count and extreme high blood pressure.”

Chesnutt’s publicist explained to WBRZ why the singer did not appear on stage during his Thursday show. “Doctors determined he had a low sodium count and very high blood pressure.”

Venue officials confirmed to WBRZ that medical personnel took Chesnutt to a local hospital for “medical reasons.” His band performed in his place while Alabama continued with their scheduled performance.

Chesnutt’s Canceled Performances

The health emergency also affected Chesnutt’s Saturday appearance. Organizers scheduled him to headline the One Portales Wine, Beer and Music Festival in Portales, New Mexico, on October 18. However, Eastern New Mexico University, which sponsors the event, announced it canceled the concert due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

In a statement to The Eastern New Mexico News, Chesnutt’s manager, Tony Conway, said the singer “wants to apologize to his fans last night and (Saturday) and hopes to come back to both cities in the very near future.”

Chesnutt’s publicist added that the singer “wants to apologize to the fans who came to see him in Baton Rouge.” He noted the singer hopes to perform there again soon. “Additionally, shows this week have been canceled, which Mark also regrets,” the publicist stated to WBRZ.

This hospitalization represents the third health incident for the “Brother Jukebox” and “It’s a Little Too Late” singer in less than two years.

In November 2023, doctors admitted Chesnutt to the hospital for undisclosed reasons and he subsequently postponed several concerts. Then in June 2024, the Texas native underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery following a “heart health issue.”

At that time, he shared with fans: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the cancellation of my upcoming shows. I send my love and gratitude to my family and friends, the band and fans for your understanding, prayers and support, and look forward to seeing you all again soon at a honky tonk near you,”

The singer has four shows remaining in October and several scheduled for November. His management has not yet announced whether they will reschedule or cancel upcoming tour dates.

Chesnutt is known for his distinctive baritone voice and traditional honky-tonk sound. He scored numerous hits throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, including “It Sure Is Monday,” “Almost Goodbye,” “Gonna Get a Life,” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.”
