Country artist Megan Moroney has made history, MTV style, as the first-ever recipient of the Best Country Moon Man trophy at the MTV Video Music Awards.
And she was up against some pretty stiff competition!
The “Am I Okay?” singer actually accepted the award during the red carpet preshow ahead of the VMAs at UBS Arena in New York.
“Thank y’all so much for voting. Thank you for everything, all the support this year,” Moroney said during her red carpet acceptance speech. “Guys, I literally fought over a ‘Moon Man’ statue at White Elephant last year at Christmas and now I have a real one. I’m freaking out. This is way better than the Home Goods one.”
Megan Moroney Won VMA Over Some of Country’s Biggest Names
Megan Moroney faced some stiff competition for the first-ever Best Country VMA.
Also nominated were Carrie Underwood’s duet with Cody Johnson of “I’m Gonna Love You,” Chris Stapleton for “Think I’m in Love With You,” Lainey Wilson’s “4x4xU,” Jelly Roll’s “Liar,” and Morgan Wallen’s “Smile.”
MTV added the country category just months after its sister network, CMT, canceled the CMT Awards.
Both awards are fan-voted. “American Idol” judge Carrie Underwood often dominated the CMTs, winning Video of the Year nine times between 2007 and 2021, according to Forbes.
But Jelly Roll won last year for his single “Need A Favor.”
VMAs Also Featured Cross-Over Country Artists In Other Categories
While Megan Moroney’s “Am I Okay?” scored in the Best Country category, a handful of country artists were nominated in all-genre categories as well, though none took home a Moon Man.
Ella Langley lost out to Alex Warren in the Best New Artist category.
Jelly Roll was up for four trophies including Best Country, Video for Good (which went to Charli xcx for “Guess featuring Billie Eilish,” Best Hip-Hop for his collab with Eminem (that was won by Doechii for “Anxiety,”) and Best Alternative for a duet with MGK (won by sombr for “back to friends.”)
Shaboozey and Dasha were each up for the MTV Push Performance of the year, which ultimately went to KATSEYE.
And Morgan Wallen was up for not just Best Country, but also Artist of the Year (which went to Lady Gaga), Best Album (which went to Sabrina Carpenter for “Short n’ Sweet”) and Song of Summer (which went to Tate McRae for “Just Keep Watching” from “F1 The Movie.”
