Reba McEntire’s Family Marks Heartbreaking Anniversary: ‘A Painful Reminder Every Single Day’

Reba McEntire‘s family is marking a painful anniversary this week, and for her son Shelby Blackstock, that loss is weighing on him in a new way as he prepares to become a father himself. On Friday, Aug. 7, Shelby marked one year since his brother Brandon Blackstock passed away at age 48 after a three-year battle with malignant melanoma, sharing a heartfelt Instagram tribute to honor him.

Shelby is the son of country music icon Reba and Narvel Blackstock, while his late brother, Brandon, was Narvel’s son from his first marriage to Elisa Gayle Ritter.

The 36-year-old opened up about the loss, the confidence his brother instilled in him, and the lessons he hopes to carry forward for his own baby boy.

Shelby Blackstock Marks One Year Since Brandon’s Death

Shelby opened his message by describing the space Brandon’s death left in his family. A year later, he admitted that the loss can still feel impossible to accept.

At times, Shelby said, it feels as though the brothers are simply busy and overdue for a phone call. The reality that Brandon is gone then returns, bringing the pain with it.

Shelby said much had changed during the year since Brandon’s death. With fatherhood approaching, he found himself looking back at the people and experiences that shaped him. Brandon remained at the center of those memories.

Brandon Blackstock Gave His Brother Lifelong Confidence

When Shelby arrived, Brandon embraced his role as an older brother and became one of the people who helped raise him. Shelby credited that support with shaping the way he approaches life.

“That confidence became the foundation for believing I could accomplish anything in life. It’s one of the greatest gifts anyone has ever given me,” he wrote.

Shelby made clear that Brandon’s influence extended far beyond childhood. The self-belief his brother encouraged became something Shelby carried into adulthood, his racing career and now his own journey toward parenthood.

Shelby Plans to Share Brandon’s Lessons With Baby Archer

Shelby and his wife, Marissa Blackstock, are expecting their first child in October. The couple has revealed that their son will be named Archer, with the nickname Archie.

In his tribute, Shelby acknowledged the heartbreak of knowing Brandon will not meet his nephew. He promised, however, that his brother’s presence will remain part of the boy’s life through the stories and lessons he plans to share.

Shelby also brought some of the brothers’ familiar humor into the emotional message. He jokingly claimed Archer would have a more handsome, taller, fitter, faster, and smarter teacher, though he conceded that Brandon could still out-hunt him.

He ended with an affectionate farewell to his “cowboy,” telling Brandon that he remains loved and missed every day.

Reba McEntire Remembered Brandon as Her ‘Precious’ Son

Brandon died Aug. 7, 2025, one day after his ex-wife, Kelly Clarkson, revealed that he had been ill, People reported. The former couple shared two children, daughter River Rose and son Remington.

A representative for the family said at the time that Brandon died peacefully while surrounded by loved ones.

McEntire, who married Narvel in 1989 and helped raise Brandon and his siblings, later described their relationship as “precious.” “I absolutely loved that child,” the country star said in October in an interview with People. She explained that she never viewed Brandon and his sisters as anything less than her own children.

For Shelby, that same sense of family continues as he looks toward Archer’s arrival and works to preserve the most meaningful gifts his brother left behind.
