Disney has been releasing rebooted versions of some of its most popular properties for quite some time now. For a while, the company planned a new version of the 2003 movie “Holes.” Now, it seems that it is no longer the case.
Disney Announced the ‘Holes’ Series In January 2025
The “Holes” reboot was set to be a gender-swapped version of the popular movie, starring Shia LaBeouf in the lead role. Disney ordered the pilot in January 2025, with Shay Rudolph leading the cast, along with Greg Kinnear and Aidy Bryant.

Regarding production, they had a full writers’ room set up and tax credits earmarked for the show. According to Deadline, it seems they shot the pilot, but Disney ultimately decided against moving forward with it. As fans of the original movie know, it’s one of Disney’s best of the 2000s, which means the show needed to live up to that standard.
The cast for the pilot also included Flor Delis Alicea, Anire Kim Amoda, Noah Cottrell, Iesha Daniels, Sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke, and Maeve Press.
One of the show’s executive producers, Drew Goddard, spoke to Variety in January about why he wanted to work on the project. He said, “My mom, a lifelong school teacher, also serves as my book scout. She just tells me what her students are reading. And the very first thing she told me about was ‘Holes,’ when it came out decades ago.”
For context, the “Holes” movie is based on the 1998 book by Louis Sachar.
‘The Mouse’ Has Other Reboots Planned
The planned “Holes” show may not be moving forward at Disney+, but the streamer has other reboots in the works. One of the most anticipated is the planned “Power Rangers” reboot series.
According to Movie Web, Dan Shotz and Jonathan E. Steinberg confirmed this at an event for “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” season two. Notably, they are the showrunners for the Percy Jackson show.
Steinberg said when asked about the show, “The rumor is true.” Of course, the creative duo couldn’t go into great detail about the series. Rumors of the future Disney+ show first surfaced in March 2025. Even then, Shotz and Steinberg were attached to the project as showrunners.
Currently, the duo has “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” season 2, which premiered on Disney+ on December 10. The full season will have eight episodes. It’s unclear when production on “Power Rangers” will begin.
