Matthew McConaughey found himself in a bit of a muddle years ago in Mexico, but it was former “American Idol” judge and iconic singer Jennifer Lopez who saved him from potentially spending time in the slammer. The Oscar-winning actor, who rose to prominence in the 90s, shared the story while speaking on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, ever so thankful that name-dropping his “Wedding Planner” co-star carried so much gravity in a sticky situation.
What Happened to Matthew McConaughey?
Matthew was pulled over in his truck while attempting to cross the border on the way back from Mexico and feared for the worst. Explaining the situation, Matthew said: “Wedding Planner got me out of a major mess-up in Mexico one time. I pulled in one late night. I’m crossing the border, going way down south, and I get pulled over.”
The officers immediately noticed his vehicle and were saying what a “nice truck” it was, and a concerned Matthew started to pull his wallet out in hopes that it would help. However, he instead ended up thinking on his feet and chatting to the officers about Jennifer Lopez.
“I’m like, ‘Oh geez, get the wallet out. Here we go. But I brought up, ‘You guys know Jennifer Lopez?’ Ever see Wedding Planner?”
The officers then began to recognize Matthew and he clarified it by saying: “Yeah, yeah, it was me.”
Matthew then noticed the atmosphere of the interaction completely shift and the officers then became excited to be speaking with him. “They were like, ‘Ohhh,'” he recalled. “And we end up taking pictures together, and they let me go.”
Wedding Planner: Synopsis
“The Wedding Planner” (2001) was a hugely successful romantic comedy film that followed the life of Mary Fiore, played by Jennifer Lopez, who was a hard-working events organizer in San Francisco. She ends up falling head over heels for Doctor Steve Edison, played by Matthew, only to then discover that he is taken by the worst possible person – one of her wedding clients, so she has to help Steve get married to somebody else!
Throughout the movie Mary and Steve grow closer and closer, to the point that their feelings for one another are becoming undeniable. Mary then finds herself met with a tough decision – should she choose her career and push her feelings down to see through the wedding the client wished for, or run away with Steve and ditch her job in the name of romance?
The film was nominated for a number of awards at the time including a Choice Comedy and a Choice Chemistry at the 2001 Teen Choice Awards. The film also took home a win for Favorite Movie Star (JLo) at the 2002 Kids Choice Awards.
Jennifer’s latest acting can be seen in her 2026 release, “Office Romance”. The R-rated rom com is available to watch on Netflix and followed a secret romance between a CEO and a lawyer that is strictly forbidden under company policy. The duo, played by JLo and Brett Goldstein, try to hide their messy affair, leading to hilarious run-ins, awkward moments and complications in the plot.
