Viewers are one step closer to seeing Prime Video’s adaptation of “The Love Hypothesis.” The highly anticipated romantic comedy based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Ali Hazelwood will premiere on Sept. 23. Ahead of the film’s release, the streamer has debuted a teaser trailer and released an official poster.

The Results Are In

Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman will portray Olive Smith and Adam Carlsen, the beloved leads of “The Love Hypothesis,” in Prime Video’s adaptation. The film is directed by Claire Scanlon (“Set it Up”) and written by Sarah Rothschild. Hazelwood and Reinhart serve as executive producers alongside Catherine Hagedorn and Michael Williams.

“The Love Hypothesis” follows Olive, a Ph.D. candidate focused on her future in academia. When she realizes her best friend Ahn (Rachel Marsh) is attracted to her crush Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), Olive needs to prove she’s moved on. She impulsively decides to kiss professor Adam Carlsen, despite him being known for being grouchy and intimidating. This single moment spirals into a fake dating scheme. When the lines between performance and reality begin to blur, Olive is forced to question whether love might be worth the risk.

The teaser trailer for the film debuted at Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest on June 27.

During the a panel at the event, Reinhart shared what aspects of the story stood out the most to her.

“If you aren’t familiar, the big, important part of ‘The Love Hypothesis’ and sort of the engine of the story, is that these two come together because of Olive’s loyalty to her best friend,” she explained. “I really enjoyed the friendship aspect. I think it’s a romantic comedy. It’s about two people falling in love, but it also stemming from a place of female friendship, which is really beautiful and lovely.”

Adapting “The Love Hypothesis” From Book to Screen

Like many book-to-screen adaptations, “The Love Hypothesis” is getting a tie-in edition. Prime Video unveiled the cover, which also serves as the film’s official movie poster, on Instagram. The edition, which hits shelves Sept. 8, features a foreward from Reinhart, exclusive art printed inside the front and back covers and bonus chapters from Adam’s perspective.

The tie-in edition’s cover depicts Reinhart and Bateman not only recreating the novel’s iconic cover but also its opening scene where Olive and Adam kiss for the first time.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, the stars discussed filming the highly anticipated scene.

“That first kiss is a lot of pressure—it’s the book cover, after all! We shot a few different angles of it to find the right one,” Reinhart said. “We had fun doing that scene and it was actually sort of an ice-breaker for us as actors as well; it was our first kissing scene of the movie.”

“What I love about the first kiss and, in fact, the entire romantic relationship between Adam and Olive is that it’s unexpected and messy. It’s funny and surprising,” Bateman added. “That’s what life is, really. That first kiss is a moment that those who love the book will be looking forward to and figuring that moment out and bringing it to life with Lili was exciting.”
