Matthew McConaughey has revealed what motivated him to return to the big screen after six years. “The Rivals of Amziah King” star spoke to AFP about his comeback. McConaughey was last seen in a live-action role in 2019’s “The Gentlemen.”
McConaughey, 56, has appeared in voice roles and cameos over the last several years. But his hiatus is finally over with “The Rivals of Amziah King,” which has so far garnered glowing reviews.
Matthew McConaughey Talks About His Acting Comeback
McConaughey has kept busy despite not appearing in a major acting capacity since 2019. The Oscar winner released his memoir, “Greenlights,” in 2020. He lent his voice to 2021’s “Sing 2” and 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” in a cameo role. McConaughey also voiced Elvis Presley in the 2023 Netflix series, “Agent Elvis.”
Now, McConaughey is happy to return to the big screen in a lead role. The “Dallas Buyers Club” star technically returned in 2025’s “The Lost Bus.” However, that movie was filmed after “The Rivals of Amziah King” and didn’t see a theatrical release.
“The Rivals of Amziah King” has faced an extensive post-production phase. Director Andrew Patterson reportedly clashed with producers over his cut, which caused the prolonged delay. Patterson ultimately won the underlying issue, allowing the film to finally go through theatrical distribution.
When asked why this particular film piqued his interest, McConaughey had an appropriately profound response. According to the actor, the film covers a wide variety of themes that interested him. In the film, an orphaned girl reunites with her foster father, whose influence provides her with the strength to seek justice.
“The joy, the soul, the humor, the music, the poetry, the mythology, original time, place, and space,” McConaughey elaborated on what he liked about the film. “Amziah is a guy who really, at the heart of himself, gives people belonging, helps people belong, and that’s part of the thing.”

McConaughey’s first acting hiatus has become famous for the impact it had on his career. Once known for romantic comedies like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” and “Failure to Launch,” McConaughey reinvented himself by turning down such roles. This ushered in the “McConaissance,” when he returned in critically acclaimed performances in “Mud,” “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Bernie,” “Interstellar,” and “Dallas Buyers Club.”
McConaughey’s saw diminishing returns in the second half of the 2010s. Films like “The Beach Bum,” “Free State of Jones,” “Gold,” and “The Dark Tower” all failed with audiences. However, unlike his first hiatus, this one wasn’t a deliberate step back from the spotlight.
In an interview with “The Hollywood Reporter,” McConaughey revealed he was still reading for the right parts. The actor wasn’t in a rush to return until he found the “right” project to accept.
“Nothing had really tickled me or got under my skin like this one did,” he said in the interview. “I wasn’t reading five scripts a day or anything, but I was consciously open and looking for the right thing to do.”
“The Rivals of Amziah King” currently has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. After being screened in 2025’s South by Southwest Film & TV Festival, the film finally received a wide release date of August 14, 2026.
