Kristen Kish has come full circle on “Top Chef.” Kish has gone from a standout contestant to the face of the franchise. She has a compelling personal story and a resume that stretches way beyond the kitchen. Kish is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing faces in food television. We have gathered five fast facts to know about the celebrated chef and host.
1. From Contestant To Host
As we now watch Kish guide these contestants through Quickfire Challenges, it wasn’t long ago that she was competing in those Quickfire Challenges herself.
Kish won season 10 of “Top Chef” in 2013. During that season, she was eliminated. However, she fought back through “Last Chance Kitchen” to become just the second woman to win the title, at the time.
Ten years later, Kish returned to the show. She stepped in as host starting with season 21 after Padma Lakshmi left.
2. She Was Raised in Michigan
This one shocked me, as Kristen was raised in the town where I currently live.
Yes, Kish was born in Seoul, South Korea. As an infant, she was adopted and raised in Kentwood, Michigan, which is near Grand Rapids.
This Midwest upbringing does influence her cooking style still today. She often blends comfort food with refined culinary techniques.
3. Kish Trained at a Top Culinary School
Kristen didn’t automatically go into cooking. She first enrolled at Grand Valley State University after graduating from high school. She only made it a couple of semesters before dropping out.
Kristen then headed to Chicago, where she enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu. She got a degree in culinary arts and went on to begin her culinary career in high-end kitchens in Chicago and Boston.
4. More Than a TV Host
If you are familiar with Kish, it’s most likely from “Top Chef” on Bravo. However, she has gone on to build quite a career. In addition to “Top Chef,” she has also hosted “Restaurants at the End of the World” and “36 Hours.”
She has appeared on “Iron Chef” and co-starred in “Fast Foodies.” Kish even tried her hand at other reality TV competitions. She was a contestant on season 3 of “The Traitors.”
On the restaurant side of things, she is a restaurateur at Arlo Grey in Austin, Texas. She has written her own cookbook and is becoming a well-known face in the food industry.
5. Embracing Her Personal Story
Kish has been very open about her personal life. She came out publicly in 2014. Then in 2021, she married her wife, Bianca Dusic.
In 2025, she wrote her memoir, “Accidentally on Purpose,” which became a New York Times bestseller. The memoir was a chance for Kish to give fans a deeper look at her journey.
From competitor to host, Kristen’s rise reflects both talent and resilience, and she’s just getting started.
