Carolina Roots

For tonight’s season premiere, Kristen Kish and her fellow judges will be putting these season 23 chefs to the test. From working as a team to create a dish that will impress the judges. All of these chefs want to remain in the competition and be named the winner of “Top Chef” season 23.

Then anxiety is running high for these chefs, as they are tasked with creating a dish using sweet potatoes. They have to highlight the sweet potatoes and not just include them in the dish. We have $250,000 on the line for the winner of “Top Chef” season 23.

Padma is bringing together 16 of the nation’s most talented chefs, each bringing their unique flair and signature dishes. The chefs will be competing with $1 million on the line, as the battle for culinary supremacy begins tonight on “America’s Culinary Cup” 2026.

Season 23 Begins

We see Kristen Kish, Tom Colicchio, and Gail Simmons at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina. The season 23 chefs meet them on the track, so time to get this started.

We see Brittany, whom Tom said he met before, as he came into her restaurant in Charlotte. We have identical twin brothers, Brandon and Jonathan, in the mix. Jennifer and Justin have been a couple for 16 years, and they are co-executive chefs at the same restaurant.

There will be no immunity awarded during the Quickfire Challenges. Instead, they can earn an additional $100,000 in prizes for those Quickfire Challenges this season.

Quickfire Challenge on ‘Top Chef’

Charlotte is all about NASCAR, so this Quickfire Challenge will include guest judges Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson, both NASCAR drivers. Duyen actually worked with Jimmie, so Kristen said no favoritism there.

The chefs are then asked to split themselves up into teams of three. They can create any dish they want using the ingredients in the pantry. The teams will have the amount of time it takes a professional driver to complete 23 laps on the course to complete their dishes, so no official timer will be going. They cannot start plating until the final lap has started. The winning team gets $15,000, and they also get to take a victory lap in the racing cars.

The chefs split into teams, and now the timer has started, as they want something quick and easy. It’s definitely hot in that sun, so the chefs are struggling. And it works into what they are making.

Jennifer is making hushpuppies and not feeling confident about it. The hushpuppies get figured out. They are all sweating on this one. The drivers are on the last lap, so plating has begun! That was quick plating, and some of the teams didn’t get all of the ingredients on that plate.

Tasting & Results

The plates are done, and time for the judges to taste these dishes. Unlike other shows, they aren’t giving a lot of feedback after tasting each dish.

After tasting all of the dishes, Jimmie said they did great, especially with the environment they were working in. The teams lacking on this one were the Red Team (some dishes missing the crispy kale) and the Green Team (other teams outdid them, and Tom’s fish was raw).

The standout teams were the Purple Team (amazing, they served a cold dish in these conditions), the Yellow Team, and the Blue Team.

Results – They loved the huspuppies, and the peaches added to the dish. The winning team tonight on “Top Chef” season 23 was the Blue, which included Jonathan, Jennifer, and Laurence. They each got $5,000 and a victory lap around the course!

Elimination Challenge

North Carolina is the #1 producer of sweet potatoes in the U.S. It’s also the state vegetable, so this challenge is all about the sweet potato. They have a variety of sweet potatoes to cook, but the chefs will draw knives to determine which sweet potato they have to showcase in their dish.

They have one hour to create the dish, which will be served the next day. It’s an individual challenge, but the dishes will be served in groups of three. In each group, there will be a winner and one chef who will be up for elimination.

The chefs head out to do some shopping. They have 30 minutes and a $250 budget. We have some chefs making desserts for their dishes.

Let’s Get Cooking

After enjoying some downtime for the evening and getting to know each other a little more, we are back in the kitchen. Time to cook these dishes. Day is using a lot of herbs for her dish. Jonathan planned on cooking a pie, but due to timing, he is transitioning to a savory version of it.

These chefs are packed into the kitchen. Not a lot of space, and not a lot of time.

Nana is peeling a lot of potatoes, so maybe too many. Day put her fish in the oven, thinking it was on. It wasn’t, so she wasted five minutes, but is determined not to go home today.

A lot of people are buzzing everywhere, but the time is running out, and time to get some testing done.

Tasting on ‘Top Chef’ Season 23

The judges are in place, and time to get the party started on these dishes:

  • Carolina Ruby Sweet Potato Group – This group includes Sherry, Jonathan, and Day. For Day, her snapper is undercooked. Jonathan was the winner from this group, as they said the sweet potato was the star of the dish. Sherry was close behind, which means Day had the least favorite dish and is up for elimination. The fish and sweet potatoes were undercooked. Too many herbs.
  • Murasaki Sweet Potato Group – This group includes Nana, Laurence, and Anthony. She is struggling and way behind, and the guys try helping her in the end to get everything plated, but it wasn’t enough. Nana is having a moment and losing it before tasting, so Kristen comes over in a very touching moment and helps calm Nana down. After tasting the dishes, Anthony won this round, and Nana had the least favorite dish. However, Tom did vote for her as his favorite dish!

More Tasting

  • Purple Majesty Sweet Potato Group – This group includes Brittany, Oscar, and Justin. After tasting all of the dishes, Brandon won this round, and Justin had the least favorite dish. The judges liked all three dishes, and it was a close round all the way around.
  • Covington Sweet Potato Group – This group includes Jassi, Rhoda, and Brittany, who is freaking out about her pork being undercooked. After tasting all of the dishes, Rhoda won this round, and Brittany is up for elimination. Rhoda had the best sweet potato so far, and Brittany’s dish felt like a pork dish with sweet potatoes, but the pork was not fully cooked.
  • Norton Sweet Potato Group – This is the final group of the night, which includes Jennifer, Sieger, and Duyen. After tasting all of the dishes, Duyen won this round, and Jennifer is up for elimination.

The judges now discuss the winning dishes to pick an overall winner tonight on “Top Chef” season 23. We also need to determine the least favorite dish of the night.

Results on ‘Top Chef: Carolinas’

We are at the Judges’ Table, as the judges have come up with a decision for tonight’s dishes. Here are the results for tonight on “Top Chef” 2026:

  • Winning Dish: The winner of this challenge is Rhoda. For winning, she gets immunity heading into the next Elimination Challenge.
  • Losing Dish: This one came down between Day and Nana, but it was Day eliminated tonight on “Top Chef.” There is no “Last Chance Kitchen” for the first two weeks, so she is headed home!
