The Ultimate Dinner Party on ‘Top Chef’

For tonight’s episode, the chefs will be taking on both their Quickfire Challenge and Elimination Challenge during the same dinner service. The chefs will first have to use Duke’s mayo to create an appetizer for a 12-person dinner party in Greenville. Then, that dinner party continues, as the chefs will each cook one course in an eight-course dinner. That’s non-stop cooking for these chefs.

The pressure is on, as no one wants to be eliminated this far into the competition. We have $250,000 on the line for the winner of “Top Chef” season 23. Who stays and who goes home on “Top Chef” tonight? Follow along with our Live Recap below!

Week 9 Begins

The chefs are in the break room after last week’s elimination. Jonathan is having mixed emotions about surviving Restaurant Warsa, but then his brother was eliminated. Then Kristen Kish and Gail Simmons come walking in, telling them to pack their bags because they’re going to Greenville, South Carolina.

They are then joined by season 22 finalist Shuai Wang, who will be a guest judge. He brought with him a sign-up sheet, as the chefs will be hosting the Ultimate Dinner Party at Soby’s in downtown Greenville. The Quickfire and Elimination Challenge will both be taking place during this party.

Quickfire Challenge on ‘Top Chef’

For the Quickfire Challenge, Kristen said that mayo is like the sixth sister sauce in the south. Because of that, they will have to create an appetizer for this challenge featuring Duke’s mayo. They want to see a variety of dishes, and they will sign up on the board with their dish. The winner of this challenge will get $10,000. Since Duyen won Restaurant Wars, she gets to select first and then pick who goes next and so on.

Elimination Challenge

No messing around this week, as Kristen is now giving the chefs details on this week’s Elimination Challenge, also. The 12 dinner party guests will go from the cocktail hour down to dinner, where the group of eight chefs will work together to serve an eight-course meal. 9:40 p.m. – Each chef will be responsible for one of the courses, and they get to sign up now for which course they want to cook, but in reverse order from the sign-up for Quickfire.

They will have 30 minutes to shop the next day and a $1,200 budget for all eight chefs, which is very tight.

Last Chance Kitchen Winner

The next day arrives, and the chefs are sitting down and discussing their menu. That is when the door opens and the winner of Last Chance Kitchen returns!

It is Rhoda! She was a beast and won the first two Elimination Challenges, but then got eliminated way too early. I had a feeling she would come back from it, and here she is.

Hitting the Road

The chefs pack their bags, and now it’s time to hit the road to Greenville. They decided on each of them getting a $150 budget and sharing ingredients where needed.

The chefs make it to Greenville and head to Whole Foods to do some shopping. These chefs are watching that budget. They check out and spend $1,199.98. That’s a pretty good spend and staying within budget.

The chefs share some downtime in the room. They talk about their nerves, especially with no more Last Chance Kitchen. They get eliminated, which means they are heading home.

Quickfire Challenge

The next day arrives, and the chefs head to Soby’s. They have one hour to cook their appetizers before they serve them. The chefs are trying to prep for dinner at the same time, as the pressure will be on.

The judges and dinner guests arrive. Meanwhile, the chefs are feeling the pressure as time is running out. They thought the apps would be easy and wanted to try and get the dinner course started, too, but now the chefs are struggling to finish the appetizer dish.

The time runs out, and the chefs are finished. They will now serve their apps to the guests.

Tasting of Apps

The chefs will serve their apps to the guests now. Here is some feedback:

  • Jonathan – Gail said it was flavorful. She loved the bacon jam at the bottom. Carl said it was spot-on and what you’d expect from a Southern deviled egg.
  • Anthony – Tom said he really liked it. Kristen said great balance between crispy and creamy.
  • Sherry – They wanted more aioli in the mayo, as she talked about. Wanted it to pop more.
  • Laurence – They were impressed with his shrimp toast, saying it’s hard not to get it too greasy or too heavy. It was beautifully constructed.
  • Sieger – Tom said he didn’t like it at all. The guests said it was super salty and soupy.
  • Oscar – The pimento cheese had a good texture. They liked that he used cotijo cheese, as it gave it the salt it needed.
  • Duyen – They said it’s too much mayonnaise, and the flavor inside is mayo. It’s like deep-fried mayonnaise.
  • 10:04 p.m. – Rhoda – Tom said he likes it, but it’s almost a little salty. It’s interesting.

All of the chefs have now served their apps. It’s time to shift to dinner, as the guests will move to the dining room and be served shortly.

Elimination Challenge Time

The chefs are working on their dinner courses now. Prep time is happening, as some will have to serve sooner than others.

Jonathan forgets about his crustinis in the oven, so they get overcooked. He has no more bread, but Sherry has some extra baguette, so he uses that.

The chefs continue to work on their dishes as the guests now arrive at the dinner table on “Top Chef” season 23. Rhoda is on dessert, but her meringue is not stiffening up. She is freaking out, as she fought to be here and doesn’t want to lose it on the first challenge back. The time runs out, and the dinner is starting to be served:

  • Jonathan (Raw Course) – The tartare was well-done, and they enjoyed the chimichurri with it. It was great.
  • Anthony (Salad Course) – They loved the pickled watermelon rind. The tomatoes were seasoned, the watermelon was beautifully compressed, but the crab and the lettuce felt out of place. It was out of balance.
  • Sherry (Seafood Course) – I can see a Brazilian flag here, and she put her heart into the dish. It was beautiful.
  • Laurence (Soup Course) – One guest doesn’t normally like corn in her soup, but she loved this dish. Tom said it was really good. The texture was really nice.

More Dinner Service

  • Duyen (Grain Course) – They loved it. It was filled with seafood, and it was very seasoned. They liked the different textures in there.
  • Sieger (Poultry Course) – It was perfectly done. It was a simple dish, but the chicken was cooked well.
  • Oscar (Red Meat Course) – It was not my favorite. Too much is going on on the plate. It would have eaten better as a soup. The rice was muting everything.
  • Rhoda (Dessert Course) – They were looking for something crunchier, as she wanted the meringue to be crunchier. One guest liked the bitterness of the lemon pith, to not make it too sweet.

Most of the chefs are feeling 50-50 about that service, but it truly comes down to the judges’ decision.

Judges’ Table on ‘Top Chef’

The chefs are back in front of the judges to discuss the results from both the Quickfire and Elimination Challenges.

Quickfire: The favorite dishes came from Anthony, Oscar, and Jonathan. The winner of this challenge was Anthony, who won $10,000.
