The world is still mourning the loss of former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Eric Dane, who passed away from ALS in February 2026. Now, James Pickens Jr, with whom he appeared on the show for several seasons, is sharing fond memories of working with the late actor.
PEOPLE recently shared a clip of Pickens Jr. while at an event honoring actress Loretta Devine, who also appeared in “Grey’s Anatomy.” The event was moderated by Steve Jones. During it, Jones mentioned Dane’s tragic passing, given his connection to Pickens and Devine, saying, “Our hearts are broken.”
The “Grey’s Anatomy” actor began, “Eric did about 140 episodes with us, and he was really smart. Very, very funny.”

The actor then stated that Dane “Always brought something new and fresh to every role that he did.” He went on, “We had a good time. I always called him the Great Dane, and his passing was truly, truly felt by everyone, and I can’t say enough. 53 years old, you know, it’s too young.”
Fans reacted to the clip on Instagram. One person said, “Eric and James always had great chemistry on screen.” Someone else said, “Genuine friendships last forever.” Another person wrote, “Eric and James, legends of Grey’s!”
Regarding Pickens Jr., he is one of the three remaining original actors on “Grey’s Anatomy.” The others are Ellen Pompeo and Chandra Wilson.
His Family Shared a Heartfelt Statement Following His Passing
According to PEOPLE, Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, due to complications with ALS. His death came 10 months after he went public with his diagnosis in April 2025.
His family said in a statement, “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
The statement continued, Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.”
It concluded with a request for privacy, saying, “Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
