Beloved actor Eric Dane has tragically passed away at the age of 53, PEOPLE reports. His death comes just 10 months after he publicly revealed that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he told PEOPLE in April 2025. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS is a “nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord,” which ultimately “affects control of the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe.” There is no cure for ALS.

After revealing his diagnosis, Dane said that he was not going to put his acting career on hold, specifically as it relates to the HBO series “Euphoria.” He went on to continue filming the final season.
In an interview with Good Morning America in June 2025, Dane revealed that his first symptom was “some weakness in my right hand.”
“I didn’t really think anything of it at the time,” he added. “I thought maybe I’d been texting too much or my hand was fatigued, but a few weeks later I noticed it got a little worse.”
For nine months, he had numerous doctors appointments, but was eventually diagnosed with ALS.
“I will never forget those three letters,” he said during the interview with Good Morning America. “It’s on me the second I wake up. It’s not a dream.”
He was set to present at the 2025 Emmys alongside his Grey’s Anatomy costar Jesse Williams in September, but missed the award show, later revealing that it was because of a hospital visit.
“So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head,” he told The Washington Post in October. “”I was a really upset about it. But you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement said (per PEOPLE). “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always.
“Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
