When Sarah Michelle Gellar isn’t on the set of her latest project, she’s likely spending time with her family, which includes her son, 13-year-old Rocky. Although the teenager is likely interested in many of the same things that other kids his age are into, he also happens to be involved in a rather extreme hobby, one that Patrick Dempsey also indulges in.
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Son Is Seriously Into Racing
Gellar took to Instagram on Thurday, April 2, to post a video of Rocky in his element. People noted, “The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress, 48, … show[ed] off his passion for racing. In the clip, set to the theme song from the Rocky movies, the proud mom showed her son driving around the tracks…”
In the caption of the post, Gellar wrote, “Showing our kids that they can achieve their dreams, is one the most important jobs as a parent. Rocky’s dream is @f1 Watching him on the road (literally and figuratively) makes me truly ecstatic.”
The star opened up about Rocky’s interest in racing as a career while talking to People on March 23, saying, “How do we foster that for him? I don’t know a lot about F1 and racing, so it’s like finding those contacts.”
She then noted that she already has a contact, saying, “And luckily, I worked with someone who’s quite a prominent racer — Patrick Dempsey.”
Racing Is ‘a Really Important Part’ of Patrick Dempsey’s Life
GettyGellar and Dempsey can be seen together in “Dexter: Original Sin,” and she is quite right that along with being an actor, he’s also an accomplished race car driver.
The New York Times explained in 2014, that “[a]lthough he was a racing fan and car fanatic as a child, he only took up racing a decade ago, during his time off from acting work.”
In March 2023, he told People, “I think racing for me has been a really important part of my life. … When you’re racing, you don’t really think about anything else other than being present. I think that’s an important thing for all of us to remember in the world we’re living in right now.”
After taking some time away from racing, Dempsey returned to the track, People noted on March 6, 2025, while addressing the “Destined to Drive: Patrick Dempsey’s Return to Racing” documentary. The doc explained that ” [a]fter nine years away, Patrick Dempsey is returning to racing and all eyes are on him.” As for Dempsey, he said it’s “good to be back.”
Perhaps now that Dempsey is back to racing, he’ll be able to give Rocky a few tips.
