When “Gilmore Girls” first premiered, no one could have predicted that a brief, quirky appearance would eventually become one of Stars Hollow’s most unforgettable fixtures. But according to creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, that is exactly what happened with Sean Gunn and the character fans came to know as Kirk.
In an October 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sherman-Palladino revealed that Gunn’s early performances stood out so strongly that she made it a priority to keep him around. At the time, “Gilmore Girls” was not the network’s biggest focus, which gave the creative team more freedom to experiment. That flexibility allowed writers to test small roles and bring actors back when something clicked, and Gunn clicked almost immediately.
Sherman-Palladino explained that after his first appearance, the writers kept finding excuses to write him into scenes. Eventually, she pushed for him to become a regular, saying they did not want to risk losing him to another show. What began as quick comic relief slowly turned into a fully realized town staple.
Why Amy Sherman-Palladino Refused to Let Sean Gunn Go

Before Kirk officially existed, Gunn appeared in several small roles, including a DSL installer and a delivery man. Each time he popped up, his timing and delivery elevated even the smallest moments. Sherman-Palladino said that consistency made him indispensable, and the decision was made to fold him into the everyday fabric of Stars Hollow.
As the show evolved, so did Kirk. He became known for holding countless jobs, from mailman to video store clerk, and for adding offbeat humor that grounded the series’ fast-paced dialogue. Sherman-Palladino also noted that Gunn was not the only actor whose role expanded beyond initial expectations. She said strong performances similarly inspired more material for Liza Weil as Paris Geller, as well as Milo Ventimiglia and Matt Czuchry in their respective arcs.
According to Parade, that instinct to trust standout actors helped shape the ensemble and gave the show much of its lasting charm.
Sean Gunn’s Honest Take on Playing Kirk
While Kirk became iconic to viewers, Gunn admitted it took him years to see the role that way. In an Instagram post shared in October 2025 to mark the show’s 25th anniversary, he revealed that he initially viewed the part as a temporary stop. He believed something “bigger and better” would eventually replace it.
Gunn wrote that even his agent suggested passing on the audition, but he went anyway after reading the script. He said the writing impressed him enough to take the chance, a decision that quietly changed the trajectory of his career. For much of the series’ run, he assumed the joke would wear thin and that each season might be his last.
That perspective shifted as the years passed. Gunn said meeting fans around the world, including younger viewers who discovered the show through streaming, helped him understand the impact Kirk had. He credited the show’s arrival on Netflix in 2014 for introducing it to a new generation and keeping the character alive long after the original finale.
Looking back now, Gunn said he sees Kirk as a gift rather than a placeholder. He shared that he can no longer separate himself from the role and is grateful for the experience, the cast and Sherman-Palladino’s vision. As he put it while reflecting on the milestone, “I can no more turn my back on him than I can on myself.”

I am still watching the Gilmore Girls reruns. Such a beautiful show and wonderful cast of brilliant actors. I wish you could bring a couple more up-to-date episodes to the fans. It ended with Rory Gilmore announcing she is pregnant. Would love to see Lorelai Gilmore tackle being a Grandmother and to reveal who is the father. Thank you for the wonderful show.
