Former “Queer Eye” design expert Bobby Berk transformed a 1930s single-room desert shack into a stunning Spanish hacienda-style wellness retreat that welcomes visitors seeking both design inspiration and mental health restoration. The property, known as Casa Tierra, meaning “home of the earth” in Spanish, represents a passion project that extends far beyond typical vacation rental offerings.
Located in Palm Desert, California, the expansive retreat spans 2.3 acres and has evolved into a seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom sanctuary that can accommodate more than 16 guests. Berk’s vision for the space centers on creating an environment that promotes joy and supports mental wellness while showcasing his signature design aesthetic.
The transformation journey began when Berk discovered the quirky property during a 2021 vacation in Palm Desert. Rather than demolishing the architectural oddities that had accumulated over decades of room-by-room additions, he chose to enhance these unique characteristics while updating the space to meet modern hospitality needs.
According to HGTV.com, Berk’s approach to the project reflects his broader design philosophy. He stated that design “isn’t just about creating a pretty space. In many cases, this is about giving someone their life back.” This perspective shaped every aspect of Casa Tierra’s development into a space dedicated to wellness and restoration.
Bobby Berk’s Architectural Evolution & Design Philosophy
Casa Tierra’s unique character stems from its unconventional development history spanning nearly a century. Berk explained to HGTV that “Throughout the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, it was added onto room by room by an amazing family. Almost every room is an addition.” This organic growth created architectural quirks that Berk embraced rather than eliminated during renovation.
The design approach prioritizes harmony with the surrounding desert landscape through a carefully curated color palette. “We are surrounded in the desert by the most beautiful colors in the world,” Berk shared, explaining his decision to keep interior colors subdued to avoid competing with the 360-degree desert views visible from nearly every room.
Pattern and organic textures provide visual interest through basketweave elements, woven fabrics, and natural wood grains. These elements add depth and warmth without overwhelming the space. Berk ensures that interior colors mirror the outdoor landscape, showing his commitment to creating seamless indoor-outdoor connections.
Lighting design receives particular attention throughout the property, with Berk emphasizing the psychological impact of illumination choices. “When you design, you really need to think … ‘How is this lighting going to affect people?'”
The kitchen renovation maintained the original layout while modernizing functionality. The updates included ebony-stained lower cabinets, weathered oak upper cabinets, and gray quartz countertops. Significantly, the team preserved original stained-glass windows created by the previous family, including one featuring a dove above the sink. Berk noted that a dove returns annually in spring to nest in a tree directly above this window.
Wellness-Focused Amenities & Global Inspiration
Casa Tierra’s amenities reflect Berk’s commitment to creating comprehensive wellness experiences for guests. The property features multiple bars, a pool, jacuzzi, bocce ball court, state-of-the-art theater room, and yoga and meditation areas designed to allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the desert environment.
The designer incorporated globally sourced elements throughout the space, including handwoven lights from a Tunisian village that he personally selected. “All the sales go to help the families in this village [we visited],” Berk explained. “We try to use as many Fair Trade products [in our designs] as possible.”
Outdoor spaces receive equal attention to interior design, with the exterior featuring a pool, pickleball court, two bars, and a morning sunrise yoga deck. Berk identifies the fire pit as his favorite outdoor area. He shared that “Looking up [at night] and watching the stars — it’s the perfect nightcap.”
The property’s entertaining focus is part of Berk’s vision for community building and social connection. “This property is all about entertaining and spending time with friends and family,” he told HGTV.com. “We wanted to set up a space where everyone can come together and hang out or play games while cooking is going on.”
Those interested in experiencing Casa Tierra can book stays through Airbnb, where the property is listed as a vacation rental in Palm Desert, California. The retreat accommodates up to 16 guests across seven bedrooms and features the wellness amenities and design elements described throughout the property.
