Joanna Gaines is sharing the story behind one of her home’s beautiful spaces. The former HGTV star never had a proper dining room space until last year — and now it’s her favorite room for family gatherings.

On August 26, Gaines took to Instagram to share photos of her gorgeous dining room.
“Last year we added a proper dining room to the farmhouse,” she explained in the caption. “It’s been my favorite place to bring together our entire extended family … all 30 or so of us.”
Gaines added, “I’m sharing the story behind the renovation and how we approached the design in the fall issue of #magnoliajournal — grab a copy on newsstands now!”
The long wooden table includes unique seating that accommodates the whole family. The room is filled with lush greenery, beautiful decor, and abundant natural lighting.
In a post on her Magnolia website, Gaines explained how she took on hosting annual family gatherings “a handful of years ago” when her mom said she was ready to give the responsibility to someone else.
“Of course, I said yes. I love every part of bringing people together: dressing up the table, creating the menu, and the reward that comes as the food settles and all that’s left to do is sink into warm conversation,” Gaines wrote.
She recalled hosting Easter for both sides of the family and not having the seating for the 35 people attending. “Back then, our dining table only sat eight, so we pulled temporary tables into what felt like every room of the house until everyone had a seat,” she noted.
Gaines shared, “That day, the house completely came alive. Every table resounded with chatter and chaos. Bowls and platters and pitchers of lemonade were being passed from long tables in the living room to the kids perched on stools in the kitchen. It was all so memorable, so imperfectly authentic that we could have easily carried on this way for years.”
Joanna Gaines Knew the Elements She Wanted in the Space
Gaines said that she imagined a space where everyone could sit together at one long table and pitched the idea of a “proper dining room” to her husband, Chip.
The “Magnolia Table” star shared her must-haves for the space. “The room needed to be big enough to seat a lot of people (even if that meant two dining tables), and because our home was built in the late 1800s, I wanted this new space to look and feel as if it had always been there,” she explained.
Fans were wowed by the renovation, with comments including, “Everything is absolute perfection,” “Those windows!! 😍😍,” and “Beautiful dining room!”
One fan gushed, “I love everything. Those windows are just beautiful. Joanna, you are so doggone talented. Everything is gorgeous.”
