Music fans rallied in support of 80s Rock Star Morrissey after he canceled two New England shows on his North American tour following an explicit threat against his life.
The British singer and former frontman of The Smiths canceled his September 19 show in Mashantucket, Connecticut, and his September 20 show in Boston, issuing automatic refunds to ticketholders.
Canadian authorities charged 26-year-old Ottawa man Noah Castellano with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm via a now-deleted post shared to the Bluesky social media service on September 4.
According to court documents obtained by Ottawa Citizen, the post read, “Steven Patrick Morrissey when you perform at TD Place here in Ottawa next week on the evening of September 12th, 2025 at about 9pm, I will be present at the venue in the audience and I will attempt to shoot you many times and kill you with a very large gun that I own illegally.”
After being arrested and charged on September 12, Castellano was released from custody on $5,000 bail. He has not yet commented on the charges against him.
The iconic singer-songwriter’s Ottawa show was performed as scheduled without incident, but the Mashantucket and Boston shows were canceled on the afternoon of September 19.
Morrissey released a statement on his Instagram explaining the cancellation, citing “recent events and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and band.”
Fans Rally in Support
In the comments of Morrissey’s Instagram announcement, fans expressed their understanding of the difficult situation despite being disappointed over the cancellations.
“Sad the show is canceled,” one Instagram user commented. “Sad this is happening to Moz. Sad at the state of the world.”
“Saw this as we were taxiing for take off from LA 💔,” another wrote. “Disappointed but understandable. Stay safe.💙”
Another fan articulated their misunderstanding of Castellan’s motivations for the threat, writing,”Who could possibly wish harm upon dear uncle Mozzer?”
The Iconic Star Bravely Soldiers On
Despite the troubling gravity of these threats, the iconic singer-songwriter plans to continue the rest of his North American tour as planned.
The world-renowned artist began his tour in Montreal on September 10 and successfully performed well-attended shows in Ottawa, Toronto, and New York.
In light of these threats and the recent gun violence against public figure Charlie Kirk, Morrissey’s team is now taking further precautions as he proceeds on tour.
The singer’s next confirmed performance is set for Philadelphia on September 23, followed by additional U.S. tour stops and a series of shows in Mexico beginning in late October.
