Gary Leeds Passes Away
GettyThe news of Leeds’ passing was reported by The Sun on Wednesday, March 4. The publication shared that a family friend of Leeds informed them that he passed away on Sunday, March 1, in Essex, England. He had a stroke just before Christmas in December 2025, although the exact cause of his death was not given.
“I’m sorry to confirm that he passed away peacefully on Sunday, 1 March, after suffering a stroke not long before Christmas,” the family friend said in a statement on behalf of Leeds’ wife. Gary is survived by his wife of over four decades, Barbara, and their son, Michael. He also leaves behind a daughter-in-law, Louise, and a baby grandson, Robert, The Sun reports.
Another loving statement celebrated Leeds and the beautiful life he lived. “Our beloved Gary passed away this evening and I know you will all join me in sending our deepest sympathy and love to all the members of the Leeds family and their close friends,” a post on social media reads, Daily Mail reports.
It continues, “Gary was the loveliest of guys and I take comfort in the knowledge that all of you here, with your love and messages on his birthdays and at Christmas, made him very, very happy that you all still cared and loved him just as much as you always have. Rest in loving peace our wonderful Mr Gary Walker. We will all miss you very, very much and it was a joy to have you in our lives.”
Remembering Gary Leeds of the Walker Brothers
GettyLeeds met his Walker Brothers bandmates, John Walker (real name John Maus) and Scott Walker (real name Scott Engel), in 1964, The Sun reports. Leeds joined John and Scott and changed his name to Walker to reflect his inclusion in the group. And so, he became known as Gary Walker. Some of the band’s biggest hits included “Make It Easy On Yourself” and “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore.”
Despite their success, the band split in 1968 but would later briefly reunite in the ‘70s to record a final album, “Nite Flights.” The musicians went on to pursue solo careers. In an interview with The Guardian in 2012, Scott was asked if he found fame challenging, to which he replied, “I did. But it’s OK now. You had to be there to understand what it was. There was a lot of pressure. I was coming up with all the material for the boys, and I was having to find songs and getting the sessions together. Everyone relied on me, and it just got on top of me. I think I just got irritated with it all.”
John died on May 7, 2011, from liver cancer at 67. Scott died of cancer on March 22, 2019, at 76.
