Danielle Fishel and Lance Bass Share What It Was Really Like to Recreate Their Iconic Prom Photo 30 Years Later

’90s icons Danielle Fishel and Lance Bass stepped back in time to recreate their iconic 1999 prom photo earlier this year, and are opening up about what that experience was like nearly 30 years later.

1999 to 2026

In April the longtime friends took to social media to share a clip of them donning the same outfits and hairstyles they wore to their prom nearly 30 years prior.

“We recreated our 1999 Prom pic, hoverhand and all (and yes, that’s the ACTUAL dress!) I still don’t know why we didn’t work out!!” Danielle captioned the clip.

The “Boy Meets World” star joked to People in an interview published Saturday, September 5, that “in a lot of ways, it felt very natural to be back in my prom dress.”

She added, “Although things didn’t fit the same way, body parts were not necessarily all in their same spot as they [were] 30 years ago.”

For his part, the former ‘NSync star added, “Oh my gosh, we have recreated that one a few times lately. People just love that photo. It’s so funny because you look back to that day and you had no idea that that was going to be a huge meme 20 years from now. And it’s just funny the story behind it.”

He continued, “It was definitely a story of our time. It was a scary night for me just because your prom night as a teenager as a closeted kid, it can be very frightening. And the fact that that picture goes along with that story just really, just really tells the story.”

Bass famously came out as gay in July 2006 on the cover of People Magazine.

“But I think it’s hilarious that this many years later we can kind of laugh at it because as much anxiety as I had during that moment in my life, it has brought me so much joy this many years later,” he now says. “And I’m so glad that Danielle and I can remain such close friends because of that experience. We have such a bond, and she’s become family and we’ll always be family.”

Where They Stand Today

The former “Dancing With the Stars” competitor teamed up with Bass as Co-Chief Cheer Officers for QVC’s 39th annual Christmas in July.

“I feel like I am every year a cheer officer at my house,” Bass told People. “Holidays are my thing. I can’t name a holiday that I don’t love, and especially Christmas.’

He added that having Fishel as his co-chief makes the experience even better.

“Danielle and I have been friends for a very, very long time,” Bass said. “She’s family to me, and we both share our love for the holidays. So we knew that we could have a lot of fun together.”

They remain close friends as Fishel and husband Jensen Karp raise their two sons Adler, 8, and Keaton, 4, and Bass and husband Michael Turchin raise 4-year-old twins Alexander James and Violet Betty.

Fishel also recently launched a podcast, “Dugout Dads Podcast” with fellow ’90s star Patrick Renna to coincide with their new YouTube series, “Dugout Dads.”
