The fall TV season is almost here, but some familiar shows will be noticeably missing from the lineup.
While networks prepare to roll out new series and bring back fan favorites, these nine shows won’t be returning to ABC, CBS, and Fox until 2027. Check them out below.
‘High Potential’
ABC has benched “High Potential” until 2027. The fan-favorite series has been renewed for a third season in March, weeks before the comedy’s season 2 finale.
In May, Ari Goldman, senior vice president of content strategy and scheduling at ABC, told Deadline that the major change in schedule is an effort to “give viewers a chance to watch these shows with as little interruption as possible across the season.”
‘The Rookie’
Another ABC scripted show not returning in fall 2026 is “The Rookie.” The series has been renewed for Season 9 and gets a midseason premiere.
In July, the show’s creator and showrunner, Alexi Hawley, teased a supersized premiere when the series returns in 2027.
“It’s a two-parter, so it won’t all be resolved in one episode — there’s a lot going on,” Hawley said at the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con. “I think it’s the best of what we do, it’s incredibly high stakes, dramatic. It’s a love story, it’s funny and unexpected. I just wish everything up to wait till January to see it.”
‘Shifting Gears’
“Shifting Gears” is gearing up for its third season, and ABC is bringing a familiar face for the big premiere. The network previously announced that Beth Behrs, Kat Dennings’ former “2 Broke Girls” costar, will make a special appearance in the Season 3 premiere when the sitcom returns in 2027.
‘Will Trent’
“Will Trent” remains part of ABC’s midseason lineup, with its fifth season expected to premiere in early 2027.
Sonja Sohn and Scott Foley, who played Amanda Wagner and Dr. Seth McDale, respectively, will not return for the upcoming season.
‘Ghosts’
CBSIn a major CBS shakeup, “Ghosts” has been pulled from the network’s fall 2026 lineup. Fans will have to wait until midseason to see what’s next for the supernatural comedy when Season 6 finally returns.
In the meantime, fans can still catch the show in its Halloween and Christmas specials later in 2026.
“I know it was couched as midseason, but with these specials that are going to be an hour long, we’re basically just premiering two weeks later than we normally would,” showrunner Joe Wiseman told TV Insider.
‘Matlock’
CBSCBS also pushed “Matlock” to its midseason lineup. Creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman reportedly requested the big move.
“I just feel like we had so much stuff to think about because we really landed the plane on this,” she told TV Insider in April 2026. “When we took this two-hour finale and really paid a lot of things off, what came with that was I’m going to need time after that to really build the architecture so that we have it for the next seasons.”
‘NCIS: Sydney’
“NCIS: Sydney” will also return to CBS during the midseason. Season 4 of the series continues to “follow the joint U.S. NCIS agents and the Australian Federal Police (NCIS-AFP) task force as they keep naval crimes in check in Sydney, Australia. The team will tackle gold heists, illicit trades, high-seas adventures, and more.”
‘Memory of a Killer’
Fox’s “Memory of a Killer” is set to return for Season 2 in 2027, with some familiar faces joining Patrick Dempsey. According to Deadline, Boris Kodjoe, Meta Golding, and Natalie Zea are set to join the cast for the new season.
‘Murder in a Small Town’
Fox also moved “Murder in a Small Town” from its typical fall release to a midseason premiere for its third season. In a press release, the network confirmed that Peter Gallagher would join the cast as a “capable yet unreliable figure” whose presence “sets up a sequence of upheavals.”
