Rock Legends Rick Springfield & Sammy Hagar Look Back on 50 Years of Friendship, ‘Music Keeps You Young’

Though Rick Springfield and Sammy Hagar are well into their 70s, they’ve never felt more alive. As they prepare for their upcoming shows this summer, the friends are looking back on a whopping five decades of friendship.

Both Springfield and Hagar have achieved “rock legend” status, but they aren’t letting superstardom go to their heads. In fact, they admit they perform to keep them feeling young.

Ahead of their summer shows, Sammy Hagar and Rick Springfield appeared in a joint interview to discuss their unique bond. Even after 50 years, they’re not even remotely tired of each other.

“We’re as old as old people!” Springfield, 76, laughed in a new interview with PEOPLE. The old friends met back in the early 1980s. Sammy Hagar wrote the song, “I’ve Done Everything for You,” which Rick Springfield went on to popularize.

Decades later, the performers are still incredibly close. Hagar insists that age is just a number and that the men still feel young at heart.

“I think Rick occasionally acts like an adult,” Sammy Hagar, 78, added. “Not an old person, but every now and then he acts like an adult. But I rarely do! It’s funny, to think of my grandpa and how he was at 60… the world has changed, but I don’t even think about age.”

“Music keeps you young anyway,” Springfield chimed in, noting that he also exercises daily. “And rock music definitely keeps you young.”

“I’m a beach nut,” Hagar told PEOPLE. “Man, you can’t keep me off the beach. No shoes, no shirt, no problem, all that. My wife will say, ‘Honey, please put on a t-shirt, we have people coming over.’ I’m like fine, I’ll try. I call swim trunks my uniform.”

The Rock Icons Prepare to Go on Tour Together This Summer

After 50 years of friendship, Rick Springfield and Sammy Hagar can’t wait to share the stage once again. This summer, Hagar embarks on his “Best of All Worlds” tour. Springfield agreed to be part of eight shows this June.

It’s going to be an entire month of performing and enjoying each other’s company. Without a doubt, fans are in for a special treat.

On Instagram, the men appeared in a reel for “On the Roll,” looking back at some of their performances together.

In the clip, the friends looked back on a performance they did in San Francisco, likely Acoustic For a Cure.

“Remember the acoustic thing?” Rick Springfield asked. “I smashed a guitar.”

“That’s the night you smashed the guitar!” Sammy Hagar remembered, playfully hitting his friend as Springfield put his face in his hands in shame. “You broke an acoustic guitar. Pete Townshend breaks electric guitars.”

“What is wrong with me?” Springfield joked as he pointed at the photo. “And that’s that guitar! That guitar died that night.”

“Well, bye-bye,” Hagar continued. “But listen, we look good.”

“Yeah, we do,” Springfield agreed. “We look like we’re rocking out.”

Fans can purchase tickets to the “Best of All Worlds” tour through the official website.
